Comments about Randall RT Series RT50H 50W Tube Guitar Amp Head:
Bought this as a restock for an unbelievable price. This is my first Randall amp. I have or have had amps from fender, peavey, marshall, roland, crate, yamaha, carvin, and others in my 30 years of playing live and the RT50H stands up against anything I have used.
Upon first inspection, the amp looks well made. Good quality Tolex covering and metal corners, sturdy strap handle and a metal front grill.
The back panel has both 4 and 8 ohm speaker outs for your cabinet of choice, an effects loop with switchable input sensitivity for either pedals or rack effects (a feature not often seen at this price point), and a bias section for biasing different tubes. It comes with 6l6's but you can use el34's if that is your cup of tea. Everything is explained in the owners guide, all you need is a multimeter. It comes with Ruby tubes, which are not my favorite brand but I will be leaving them in for now and see how they last.
The front panel has the control layout for the two channels as well as power and standby switches. Each channel has its own dedicated tone stack which is a big plus in my book and in the case of this amp is absolutely necessary. The channels are voiced quite differently in the tone section. The clean channel is very bright and open, but maybe just a little on the thin side, more so with single coils than with humbuckers, but that is usually the case.Crank the gain and you can get a nice crunch. There is a bright switch on the clean side, although I think it would have been better placed on the overdrive channel. The overdrive channel will go from meek to in your face with a turn of the gain knob. At lower volumes it is a little muddy, but it opens up as the volume goes up. Would have been nice to have that bright switch on the OD side. There is also a spring reverb built in and it is very usable. The unit comes with a 3 button footswitch (channel, reverb, effects loop) with a nice long detachable cord. I run this through a home brew cabinet with two 10's and two 12's and it will fill a large hall if you turn it up...
My band plays a diverse list of music and the RT50h can cover them all. From clean and spacey to melt your face metal, it's all in there if you point the knobs in the right direction. I can't speak for reliability since I have only played one gig with it but I think it should hold up very well as I take good care of my gear.
All in all, I am very pleased with my purchase, and I hope to get many years of service from this puppy. I'm sure there are better amps out there but for the money the RT50H is pretty hard to beat! Get one before they are gone, you'll be glad you did
