If you play wedding receptions, as I do, you have to cover a wide variety of music styles. And you have to set up very quickly. And you sometimes have to play in a cramped corner of a country club or hotel ballroom.
In this environment, using a lot of pedals just doesn't work. The guests spill beer on them, and the singer trips over them. When I have to work a crowd, please a client, and get paid, I don't want to be looking at my feet.
So bring on the ProCo Rat 2. I set the Distortion, Filter, and Volume knobs to the 12:00 position, and I can play any style of rock guitar (or blues, jazz, R&B) that a general audience might want to hear.
The Rat2 tracks my dynamics like no other distortion I've ever used. I turn the guitar volume down, or hit the strings softly, and the Rat2 gives me a lightly distorted rock rhythm guitar tone (think Keith Richards). I turn my guitar volume to 10, and I get a wailing, sustaining solo tone (Neal Schon). I go to the neck pickup and turn the volume and tone down a little bit and I get a funky, raspy tone that I might use for an R&B/jazz solo (John Scofield). One setting, three sounds (and more).
Like the famous, simple, totally functional Zippo lighter, the Rat2 does one thing, and does it well. No bells and whistles, no foolin' around, no nonsense. It distorts your guitar tone in a highly musical way, which you can make work for every type of rock and blues music you're likely to play.
It's THE distortion box to use, if you're using just one.
It's a professional tool, a musical instrument, a necessity.
The ProCo Rat2 makes it way easier for me to go out and earn money with my electric guitar.

This is a good pedal, I've always liked this pedal. I've always had a boss distortion pedal and I've yet to buy this one. It's a little pricey but four stars is a good review. If you have no pedals and are thinking about buying this one, you would be making a solid choice.

Has fantastic range of tones and a lovely fuzzy, crunchy hard distortion when maxed out. Will stand up to ANY knocks and drops. It is rock solid. Price is great for the only distortion pedal you will need to buy!
