The Ultimate Clean Amp

By Joshua Rodriguez

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Fender Vintage Reissue '65 Super Reverb 4X10 Guitar Combo Amp:

This is the amp that inspired me to finally ditch my pedals and play some cleans once in a while. If you've never experienced the articulate, room-filling, hi-fi cleans of a blackface Super Reverb before, then you're missing out on one of the quintessential guitar experiences. The downside of this amp is that it's big and loud - apartment dwellers and coffee-shop giggers probably need not apply. But with that size and volume comes incredible projection, bass, and dynamics - like your guitar is a grand piano. Fat Fender reverb only helps add more dimension to the sound. Plus, it's not a one-trick pony, by any means. Blackface amps are great at taking pedals, if you use them, but I love to just crank the amp instead - maybe using a clean boost to put it over the top. That silky smooth clean sound turns into a fat, aggressive overdrive that's about as close to the SRV sound as you can get without having his fingers. Because this is a vintage-style amp, it's not going to have the features, the channel-switching, or the options of a lot of modern amps. But the sound of a cooking Super Reverb is a staple tone of classic rock, and one of the all-time classic Fender tones. If the volume and size isn't a problem, then it's worth at least a try - it's a classic for a reason that's obvious as soon as you plug in and turn it up.

ROCKIN' SURFIN' FLASHBACK FROM THE 60's- NEW AND IMPROVED!

By luckylarrys

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Fender Vintage Reissue '65 Super Reverb 4X10 Guitar Combo Amp:

I had an original black face Super Reverb back in the day and always regretted selling it. Since then, no other amp has been able to faithfully capture the single-coil tones of Fender Strat's and Tele's in my opinion. This is everything the old one was and more! Sure, the purists will argue that vintage tubes, transformers, caps, etc. are essential to the Holy Grail tone that the originals were noted for, but Fender did a nice job replicating it's original tone with the added benefit of reliability that the old ones cannot compare to. Im not particularly impressed with the reverb tank on this reissue, although t's nice to be able to disconnect the reverb with the jacks and allow other effects to get the signal before the preamp. Pricing on this amp takes it out of reach for the average working stiff. I took away a star for that. Forgive me, Fender. I still love you!

The only amp ever needed

By Uncle Billy

from Tampa Florida (now)

Comments about Fender Vintage Reissue '65 Super Reverb 4X10 Guitar Combo Amp:

I own this amp purchased new in 1967. It had some good times where it sat in one spot for a year or so being faithful to every demand I made upon it. There were bad times when it was stacked in and travelled for hundred (several times for thousands) of miles from job to job. Once fell over on it's face in the back of a pick up truck. I stuck in a couple of broken tubes and it fired up, coming through like the champ it is. Now like myself, it is retired in it's corner of the studio, to heavy for me to move around. But it never fails to steal the show when musician friends drop around to play some of the old tunes and reminisce about yesterday. If you can have only one amp, this is it.

sheer beauty

By gregorio

from Annapolis

Comments about Fender Vintage Reissue '65 Super Reverb 4X10 Guitar Combo Amp:

I like a clean sound, generally. This was the cleanest amp that I could find. You will not get distortion, so if you want that, you'd be better to go with a Marshall. I often times would not be able to crank the amp enough to get an overdrive sound anyway. This thing sounds just beautiful at low volumes and sounds beautiful at very high volumes.I generally use some distortion pedals to get distortion when I want it. The Jensens just sing. The high gain settings with bright capture every single sound.(including the slightest mistake) I don't think you'll do better for this amp for a clean sound. You can muddy it up as much as you want with plug-in effects.

Great Clean amp, but be careful

By JJ-.6gmw

from Pittsburgh

Comments about Fender Vintage Reissue '65 Super Reverb 4X10 Guitar Combo Amp:

This is definitely a fine tube powered amp in terms of its clarity, quality, and speaker configuration. However, if you are accustomed to using tube amp gain to get some grit to your sound, you might want to be careful with this amp. Of course there are loads of effect pedals available to compliment the fine, clean tube sound this emanates, but pedals are not the same as a gain knob on a tube amplifier. They tend to sound a little synthetic as compared to pure tube gain. That said, it's still a great amp. If you have a fine guitar, this amp will highlight your guitar's quality or lack there of. If you are patient enough to research the right effect settings, it will do whatever you want!
