I got this pedal about 5 yrs ago as part of my "pedal revival." For years I had used all rack gear but I missed my younger days when I had pedals so I bought a bunch of Boss pedals sight unseen because I remembered how much I loved them back in the early/mid 80's.
This one was a bit of a disappointment. The sound of this pedal is decidedly digital. That's not to say it's necessarily bad but it was not what I was hoping it to be. If I were more into extreme whooshing and swirling then this pedal would probably be more to my liking. But it changes the tone of my guitar too much, actually changes the tone! The phasing isn't thick and chewy like I had hoped, instead it's very digital, thin nad overpowering.
Plus, there's a total dropout when engaging/disengaging the phaser - not cool!
I have since bought an EHX Small Stone modified by Analogman. Now that is what I was looking for!! Much more natural and "vintage" sounding.
Overall I would recommend this for novice players or those who prefer a robotic digital phase. I would not recommend it for those who are seeking out vintage '70s' type phase. Get an analog one instead.

Good, not great

Comments about Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter Pedal:

Bought this pedal to try to duplicate some classic 70s R&B bass lines that used phasers, (think intro to the Ojay's "For the Love of Money") and although I like the tweakability of this pedal, and I was able to dial in a good sound that I like, I tend to agree that the sound is too digital. Would like a warmer, less processed sound, more akin to what the cats in the 70s were playing.

Maximum Shiftage

Comments about Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter Pedal:

This Boss pedal is an amazing effect for your line up. I do a lot of Death Metal where I like to have a good phasing effect for the distortion and the clean. This one fills in all the holes in my line up.

Simply Amazing!

Comments about Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter Pedal:

This pedal is awesome. I was going to buy the MXR Phase 90 until I came across the PH-3. Spending a little extra money was worth this pedal. The flexibility is endless. Every phase type is different and original. If you tweak some of the settings on the phase types you can get an underwater synth sound out of it. This pedal is one the best on the market. It's a must have. Destined to be a classic.

Comments about Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter Pedal:

I love this pedal. If you can't find a sound or sounds out the 6,000,000 sounds you can get out of it then something is wrong. And of course it's a BOSS! What more can I say about them. These stomp boxes are immortal. They will never die.

I went into a store looking at effects for my bass and I was looking for the new BF3 flanger from Boss. I found that I liked the smooth sounds of this pitch shifter much better!

Best BOSS phaser ever to exist. Well done. : )

By Brian-NuJ.H

Comments about Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter Pedal:

Neat... so I'm the first to review this pedal. Well folks, indulge yourself... here we go.. I've tried a LOT of phasers in my time. I've tried all generations of the small stone phaser, the MXR 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100.. (just kidding, some of those don't exist).. and of course all of the BOSS phasers. Now, naturally, not everyone would like the same pedal. Some might like the very rich and extremely wet sounds that come from one of the huge army green Electro-Harmonix Small Stone's.. while others would prefer the (in my opinion) dry and flat tones you get from the BOSS PH-2 Super Phaser. Either way, I PROMISE you that you'll love the new PH-3. The beauty of the PH-3 is that it's more versitle than ANY other phaser ever to hit the market. See, the older phasers use 4 or 6 step phasing to get the phasing sound you hear. The newer digital ones use 8 or 12 step phasing.. this basically means that the phasing sound you hear is a little more "detailed" or.. "shaped." At any rate, the PH-3 has different modes for any step phaser you want!!!!!!!! NEEEEEEATTTTTTT!! It also has an expression pedal input (you haven't lived until you've rocked the sounds of a phaser back and forth!), AND it has two reeeeally sweet modes called "rise" and "fall" where the phasing sound either just keeps going up and up and up, or down down down. Don't ask me how it does it.. I mean, it's hard to imagine a phase sound that just keeps going up or keeps going down... but BOSS pulled it off, and nicely too. And no, I'm not done. You can step on this pedal to the beat of a song you're about to play, and you INSTALLY get a phase sound that phases IN TIME with the beat you just tapped out. BOSS did such a nice job of adding nice new and very FUN features in their new phaser, the PH-3. Well DONE
