I got this pedal a little while ago and can't stop using it. It sounds very good. You are getting a lot for your money with this product. The tone control is nice, it allows you to alter the sound significantly. At the one extreme it produces a warm mellow distortion, that gets close to overdrive. On the other extreme it produces harsh, fuzzy almost tinny in your face distortion. My criticism of this setting is that it lacks bass, but that can be corrected by boosting the low setting on your amp. The level control on the pedal produces more than enough volume. I typically set it to just 1 quarter. Overall I would say that it is a very useful and versatile pedal. You will get a lot more out of this pedal than you will out of the lead channel of your amp. If you need distortion, this is all you need and more. BUY IT! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

This pedal does give off okay distortion(Ibanez Tone-Lok series is better), but with my amp, a SilvertoneIII, and my friend's, a Crate GX15, when the overdrive on the amp is turned on it blitzes and makes a horrendous noise. If you purchase this pedal, check it with several types of amps, different guitars, and how it works with the overdrive. Definitely, the Ibanez Tone-Lok is better.

The Classic Distortion Pedal!

By HG

from Undisclosed

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

I've owned all the high end and/or higher dollar Overdrive and Distortion Pedals....
I've had the Fulltone OCD, Keeley DS1, Ibanez TS808, Boss MT-2, but if I had to do it all again I would just buy the Boss DS-1.

It is simple, 3 knobs, level, gain, and tone.
It does that classic rock gain that we've heard in 100s of songs.

Right now I own the Boss SD-1 Overdrive and the Boss DS-1 Distortion.

Why spend well so much for 1 good pedal when you can have both of these for less?

Is the DS-1 or SD-1 any better than the others? NO, but they are just as good for a lot less money.

The Beginner's Pedal: Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal

By zedthewizard

from Undisclosed

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

It's a good pedal and sometimes great. It has a good deal of flexibility to it. But, I do like some other pedals better.

This is a very inexpensive pedal that can help you create a great deal of tonality especially with a cheap equalizer like a Danelectro.

It has a nice warm natural clip, a great american rock sound that I feel is very much Tom Pettyish, enough of a good distortion for "Sunshine of Your Love" and you can even get fuzzier. With the equalizer I can really get it to scream. I had a somewhat tubescreamer sound going the other day with this, an equalizer, a tube preamp, and a Vox pathfinder. Played for hours having fun off the pentonic minor.

I've rated this pedal an eight. It's a versatile pedal. I like it. I recommend it. I did have mine Keeley modified, but you know I was new and I wanted to think I had a real nice pedal. And, I do.

Because of other pedals, I would not replace it right away considering mine is modded, however, I'd keep it in the back of my mind as something to buy at the right time. It would be replaced, just not immediately. I bet there'd be times when I'd have a pedal day, and I'd wish I had replaced it!

Good

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

It's a good pedal if you are playing like AC/DC style music and or a more mellow kind of metal. I Would like to use a Metal muff Distortion cause it has more distortion than this one. but a good pedal for Beginner/Intermediate.

Great Pedal for the money

By Les Paul guy

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

Okay, so its a Boss. This DS-1 is built like a tank, but I knew that because I own several Boss pedals. I have read several reviews here and thought I would give one a try. When I bought the pedal I knew from the start I was gonna do the Keeley Seeing Eye Mod to it. Out of the box it was okay. It had a pretty good bite to it, but was a little too bright and thin sounding for my taste. After doing the SEM to the pedal it came alive. It now is very full and thick sounding. Pinched harmonics just jump out. I was so impressed that I bought another one and did the SEM to it too. I have two pedal boards. Im playing this with an Agile AL-3100 into a Marshall DSL 100 half stack.. Im also using a Boss GE-7 DD-6, RV- 5 and Keeley Compressor with it. WOW, it screams. I love this pedal. I own and have owned several boutique pedals over the years. This pedal may be the least expensive pedal that I own, but it is proudly sitting on my board, and it will be used frequently. For the price this is a no brainer just buy it. Whether you mod it or not, for $40 it is a great tool to have in your arsenal. Keep the tone below 10:00 and it will be okay.

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

I tried out the pedal for the first time. The sound is excellent. The price is well below pedals of equal value. Dealing with Music 123 is great as usual. Fast shipping, great price. Product was exactly as described.

Great Sound and Durability for a Smokin' Price.

By Shredder-BFSFd

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

I was given my first DS-1 by a relative when I was 16. I got a lot of use out of it and found it to be a fantastic stomper. The thing's built like a tank and is very easy to use. I lost that DS-1 when I was 19. I actually marched into Radio Shack and bought another one (even though there were other pedals beside it and knowing there's other stomp boxes out there that would work fine). Since the pedal's virtually unstinkin'breakable and so easy to set up, I just never grew tired of it. I mainly use an effects processor now, but refuse to get rid of my DS-1, it's simply a great pedal for a great price.. The only flaw to it is that it has only two options onboard. One being the actual distortion (gain) level, and the other being a Tone knob. Third knob is merely for volume. Thought the stock sound is great, it is indeed limited. But I used this pedal for 10 years with no problems, no breakage, no failures, no NOTHINGS. You can consider this pedal a "must have" if your budget isn't a mile long.

Just what I was looking for

By Adam-VqBFO

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

I have a Line6 Spider amp (the original) and I was not satisfied with the onboard distortion it had. It said it was supposed to be the biggest, baddest yada yada yada, but it wasn't cutting it for me. I found that it sounded too muddy when it was loud, even miced up and recorded. I had to do something. When I plugged in the Boss DS-1 all that was cleaned up and it sounded great. I know there are pedals out there for better sounding distortion, but in my opinion, most are specialized towards a certain genre. The DS-1 gave me a clean, universal distortion that I needed for my amps. It sounds great!

Great Pedal

By Justin-11ttU

from Gainesville, FL

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

I bought this pedal last minute because I needed to be able to switch from clean to distorted for a gig, and it turned out to be exactly what I needed. Worked great with the band set-up. There wasn't any noticeable fuzz with the volume turned up loud, and the distortion was perfect. i play a lot of GNR and other classic rock and this was perfect.
