Without fail if a tube amp needs a new pre-amp tube I go for a Tung-Sol 12AX7. Every new amp I have bought becomes better when these go in them whether 2 watts or 40. I couldn't be happier with a new currently made tube, they are reliable and built like a tank. They allow the amps circutry to work like it was designed and thats what they're supposed to do.

I have a Hughes and Kettner Switchblade and it seemed to lose tone and warmth at high volume. I replaced the preamp tubes with these Tung-sol 12ax7's and WOW! They really made a difference.

This is a pretty good pre-amp tube. It has lots of gain and little noise. Sound wise, it's ok. The last one I had lasted about a year before crapping out. For brand new tubes, one doesn't have much choice as it will either be Russian, Chinese or Chekoslovakian. IMO, none of these new tubes sound as good as NOS RCA, Philips, GE or Sylvania tubes do. But hey, they get the job done. For the price, the Tung-Sol is a fair value. To my ears, it sounds very similar to Sovtek, which it probably is.
