Superior features include a large, easy-to-read, LCD needle-style display.
The Korg CA-40 Electronic Chromatic Tuner has wide range that covers A0 (27.50 Hz) - C8 (4186.01 Hz), you can tune a variety of instruments with the Korg CA-40, including wind, string, and keyboard instruments. The pitch and range are detected quickly and accurately. You can use the built-in high-sensitivity microphone to detect the pitch of an acoustic instrument without the need for any other equipment. Alternatively, you can use the separately sold CM-100 contact microphone to send the vibration of the instrument directly to the tuner, so that you can tune accurately without worrying about other sounds in the environment. An output jack (bypass) has been added to this digital tuner, making it easy to check the tuning even while you perform.
Conveniently thin and compact The pocket-sized CA-40 features a refined design with a stand on the back that lets you place this digital tuner on any surface.
Large, high-precision LCD meter
The CA-40's display has been enlarged for even clearer visibility. In addition to providing both the accuracy of an LCD and the easy viewing of a needle-style meter, red and green LEDs are also provided to indicate pitch deviations, making tuning smooth and easy.
Sound Out function
In addition to letting you tune visually using the meter, this digital tuner provides a Sound Out function that plays a reference tone through the internal speaker, allowing you to tune by ear. You can adjust the reference tone in semitone steps over a range of C4 through C5 (one octave) to accommodate a variety of instruments. Since the reference tone you specify is remembered, it's easy to sound it again whenever you need to.
Adjustable Calibration
The Calibration function of this hand held tuner lets you adjust the pitch in 1 Hz steps over a range of 410 - 480 Hz in order to accommodate a variety of concert pitches, giving you the flexibility to tune accurately to any song or key. There's also a memory backup function that preserves the Calibration setting and Sound Out settings even when you turn off the power.
Auto Power Off function
The power of this digital tuner will turn off automatically if the unit is left powered-on for 20 minutes without performing any operation, avoiding unnecessary battery consumption.
Approximately 85 hours of continuous use
The CA-40 is designed for long battery life, and allows approximately 85 hours of continuous use (continuous A4 input, Meter mode, zinc-carbon batteries).
* Even if a sound is within the detectable pitch range, detection may be unsuccessful for instrumental sounds that contain a large number of overtones or decay rapidly.
** The calibration setting and the Sound Out reference pitch are remembered even when you turn off the power. However, when you replace the batteries, these settings will be initialized to the default values; the calibration will return to 440 Hz, and the Sound Out reference pitch will return to A.
Korg digital tuners and metronomes purchased from a Korg USA authorized dealer now have a three year warranty.

Great little piece of equipment
Pros
- Easy To Use
- Functional
- Good Quality
- Great Octave Range
Cons
Best Uses
- Tuning Old Electronic Org
Comments about Korg CA-40 Electronic Chromatic Tuner:
I am using the CA 40 to tune the tone generators in a 50+ year old organ. The way the CA 40 "reads" the correct octave is a wonderful feature. I can see a lot of other uses for it. It is small, doesn't "eat" batteries, and convenient to use. I expect to use it in tuning brass instruments. All this at a very modest price. It is well worth every penny.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Good Tuner
Comments about Korg CA-40 Electronic Chromatic Tuner:
This tuner really is a good tuner, it doesn't get beat up easily, and it works quite well. I've judged it's tuning with other tuners and it's quite accurate. You can flat down easy to different tunings with it and also, you can use it to tune your bass. It's a pretty nice tuner, but it's quite difficult to use with an acoustic in a louder setting because it catches everything else. But it has a plug for using with an electric guitar so it would be fine then. Good cheap tuner.

Versatile and Precise Tuner
Comments about Korg CA-40 Electronic Chromatic Tuner:
The Korg tuners are very accurate and easy to use with quick precision. With both the LED and needle style readout, they can be used in all lighting situations, but particularly with the chromatic model, you do need to make sure you are tuning to the correct note. Since the face is not backlit, you will prefer to have at least a spot check of light (or sound) to be sure what note you are tuning to, as the LED will only tell you if you are sharp, flat or on the money, on whatever note you happen to be closest to. So, if you are way out of tune and in the dark, it is conceivable that you could tune the instrument to a different key without knowing it. (Even a pen lamp would solve that issue, but keep reading for more work-around ideas.)
Also, with the chromatic version, you will need to know what notes you are supposed to be tuning to in the first place, since there are not predefined tuning sets exclusively for guitar as there are with other models. Of course, that is no problem, if you know your target notes, or if you at least know one, and a way to tune off of that, in which case you could quickly tune the remaining strings by ear while simultaneously checking them for precision with the tuner.
I personally chose this chromatic version of the Korg tuners, for the versatility of being able to tune any instrument, which does require me to know what notes it is supposed to be tuned to, but then that is pretty much a given with any tuner, unless you select a model that is exclusively for a particular instrument. There are models of the Korg, for example, that are setup specifically for variations of the guitar, but might not be the perfect model choice for tuning a variety of instruments with very different tunings.
Another thing that makes the Korg quite versatile is that it has a built-in mic, which means you can easily tune acoustic instruments that don't have electronics and can't be plugged in directly to the tuner. Korg also makes a handy clip on mic for that purpose, but if you don't have that accessory, you are still in business.
To top it off, the tuner can also play reference notes audibly, allowing it you to tune an instrument by ear, so, all your bases are covered.
Since you have both an input and output, you can leave it in line and pass your signal on through to the amp if you like.
Oh, it is also very compact in size, at 2.64" x 3.94" x .67" thick.
The only reason I gave it a 9 instead of a 10, was due to the display not being backlit, which would be nice, but as I said before, even if you're in pitch black darkness, that doesn't prevent you from still being able to tune, as long as you understand what you are doing. Of course, the unit also lacks a metronome and drum machine, recording device, special effects, etc., but that is a model thing. Korg actually does make models that have all that, too, if you want to spend the extra bucks. Otherwise, this is definitely an excellent tuner for an excellent price. Buy it with confidence.
