The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

By Randy Swift

from Undisclosed

Comments about Gator GR-6S ATA 6-Space Shallow Rack Case:

The Good
1) Depth is apparently "not readily available" from other manufacturers...
2) Very compact footprint...
3) Rack rails provided front & back have a very good attachment system... Moveable threaded bar placed behind non-threaded rack angle which runs the full vertical length of the rack rails... This makes it easy to manipulate the holes for that "one piece of gear" that wont line up exactly as it should...
4) Includes good quality screws with really good washers...

The Bad
1) Lids do not seal nearly as throughly as I am used too... Latches, when twisted, do not have that "pulling the lid tight" resistance that I am accoustomed to...
2) Lid fasteners are reversed making them very cumbersome to open & close... The twist part of the fasteners stay with the case as opposed to coming off with the lid... This means that if you mount any sound generating equipment in the case or stack them in conjunction with any amps / speaker cabs, you can count on some rattle being generated...
3) Not as substantial as the "three letters" I normally carry... The composite material used in these cases is more "rubbery" for lack of better terminology... This makes the units more flexing and contributes heavily to the poor seal between the lid and case itself...

The Ugly
Carry handle wells are not as deep as I am used too... I am a bigger guy and I can not get a robust grip on the handles without painfull scraping and pressure on my knuckles during pick-up & carry... Very unpleasant... I have resorted to slipping a portion of my fingers under the handle and being extra careful not to drop them... In fairness to the case, it is a compact design and in this life, you generally have to give up something in order to get something... No charge for that info...

Conclusion
These cases fill a need that apparently no one else does... If you need a compact case that will reduce the overall amount of cubic space required to carry your gear, these will definately do the trick for you... I would caution full timers (with roadies) or frequent flyers... These cases are NOT for you... After 38 years in Nashville, I have seen many "ATA Approved Flight Cases" fall in battle... In my humble opinion, these untis simply are not tough enough to withstand the riggors of the "full time" road... But, if you are like myself, down to carrying your on gear & are looking to reuduce your load footprint, these cases provide reasonable protection for your gear and should do fine

Great Case!

By Eric LeVan

from South Dakota

Comments about Gator GR-6S ATA 6-Space Shallow Rack Case:

This case is as well made as all the gator cases. The only pbroblem I've had with the molded type cases is that they can shatter if struck on a doorway or something on really cold gigs in South Dakota. Be careful if your case hasn't warmed up!
