One thing has stayed consistent throughout John Petrucci's long and successful career: the DiMarzio pickups in his guitars. John has been pushing the envelope of progressive rock since the late eighties, and this DiMarzio LiquiFire Humbucker Pickup ensued from Dimarzio's most recent collaboration with John. He used this guitar pickup throughout Dream Theater's tenth studio album, Black Clouds & Silver Linings. John swears this is the best live and studio sound he has ever heard. He wanted a neck pickup with a flowing, singing solo tone when used with a heavily overdriven amp, plus a clear chord sound with a clean amp setting.
The DiMarzio DP227 guitar pickup is recommended for the neck position but can also be used in bridge position.

The LiquiFire is just outstanding. Words do not describe the level of perfection that this pickup achieves. Its sound is very warm, and nicely rounded. No mud no matter how much distortion you crank into it. The bass is nice and full, and very punchy. Mids are clear and sing out in chords, and are also punchy. Highs are clear, crisp, and liquid (hence the name, I'm sure). As an instrumental guitarist, I rarely utilized my neck pickups for lead lines until I bought this, and now I actually favor the sound. Harmonics ring out loud and clear. This baby has all the power of a bridge pickup, but with the sweet, sweet tone you crave. Pairs very nicely with the Dimarzio Evolution Bridge in an H-H setup.

This is one of the best pickups i have ever played on, it has a very nice sound to it. It has a very nice clean sound, very warm and crisp. It does not sound muddy at all. With distortion it has a very warm tone, but still allows for pinch harmonics to squeal. It pairs very well with the Crunch Lab pickup in the Bridge. If you like John Pertucci and his tone, this pickup is for you.
