A nontraditional approach to high-output bridge humbucking guitar pickup design. Most hot humbuckers concentrate the pickup's power in a narrow frequency range for maximum impact. The Dimarzio Special spreads the sound over a broader range so bass and treble tones are boosted and midrange is lowered. The result is a sound that's hot, clean, and open at the same time. Recommended for bridge position.
- Clean overdrive with high-gain amps
- Very effective in dual sound and coil-splitting clean modes
- For soloing, this is a very good pickup to play with a midrange-heavy amp
- Mid-scoop keeps the initial pick attack clean; notes don't run together as much with legato playing, even with heavy overdrive

Comments about DiMarzio DP161 Steve's Special Guitar Pickup:
I play fusion, blues and rock with the guitar that this pickup is in. With my standard setup, (guitar into pedalboard into a Vox AC30, Fender Blues Deluxe or modified Blues Junior) this pickup is very sterile and lackluster. Though the output is there, it doesn't sound like it due to the lack of mids and the fact that it's SO clean. It sounds great when split and put into parallel or series with the Air Norton in the neck. That's just not a very practical tone when you want to stand out with great tone. When I plugged into my friend's Marshall this pickup sounded great! Every note was well defined and very clear, without being brittle. If you're into high gain, this pickup is great. If you want a versatile pickup that plays well with others, look for a more round pickup.
