All I can say is WOW! What a difference from the Besson Prestige 2051s I had before this one. This is the smoothest horn throughout the entire register that I have played. No trigger needed with this horn! If you are looking for pound for pound the best that money can offer this would be the horn that you need!
I played a Yamaha 641 for years and bought an 842 a couple of years ago. I have test played every model of pro euphonium and the 842 surpasses them all. This horn truly sings and has the best intonation of any horn out there. The 842 was superior in every aspect but the valves. While the 842 pistons are very good, stainless steel valves are nicer. If Yamaha only made it with stainless pistons the other companies could just give up!
I've enjoyed playing the 842S for several weeks now. Great intonation, wonderful valve action, very responsive. A friend of mine (who also owns a Besson sovereign) said he wants to sell his other 5 horns to get a 842S. Great horn, very satisfied.
I became the owner of this instrument on Christmas of 2003. I was amazed at the beautiful tone, and the control I had over the music I played. I qualified for district, regional, and all-state band with this instrument and made my sophomore year even better. I highly recommend this instrument to anyone looking for a new Euphonium.
Positives-The 842 has a fine centered sound and the intonation is excellent throughout and especially in the mid range. Aesthetically, It is a pretty horn and has a great protective case. High notes are easy to hit and sustain with minimum air pressure compared to some models. The valves are good. Overall, the horn responds to different articulations well. Lip slurs are easy. However, intonation impressed me the most. The tone created is brighter rather than dark. It is an easy horn to play. Negatives- Low range(below staff to pedal) is not as open and free flowing as the Miraphone or MeinlWeston. If you want a really dark sound; this horn is not for you. Conclusion-Good horn! Could be the horn for you!I'll give it 5 stars minus . There is room for Yamaha to improve on an already great instrument.
