Yamaha YCL221 Bass Clarinet

Matte finished ABS resin body
The matte finish gives the clarinet a much better appearance, while the ABS resin body makes the clarinet more lightweight and very durable while giving it a warmer sound and an excellent response.

Redesigned neck angle
The neck angle is now the same as that of the professional models, resulting in a much more comfortable and natural playing position.

Leather pads with plastic resonators
These pads (also used on our saxophones) are longer lasting and provide a better feel with increased projection than standard clarinet pads.

Redesigned register tone hole
This tone hole was scientifically designed and placed for extremely accurate intonation.

Rounded bridge key connector
The rounded key prevents key damage and eliminates the need to hold the keys when putting the instrument together.

New joint system
New joint systemThe rubber rings surrounding the cork help to prevent air leaks, ease assembly and prevent keys from binding.

I've been using this model since last year, and it makes a much better sound than some of the other instruments I've used. A bit on the pricey side, and the mouthpiece that comes with it isn't very good, but it's a great instrument for beginners and more experienced players.

Our school bought this BC on January and when I started using it, I was playing an old crap with a mouthpiece that had almost no more cork, I was amazed by the difference of sound and response. I was in love with the case which is green and is so small. The most intelligent thing is the BC is cut in half, reason why the case is so small, but also its now easier to carry on the bus when there is like 100 people on it.

It has a great design, performs and looks like a professional instrument. I was very impressed with the ease of playing the upper register, i.e. high C. Very solid and well constructed. I have played other big, brand name bass clarinets that could not compare. A terrific value.

I've just gotten back into playing Bass Clarinet after a hiatus of some years, and I was looking for a reasonably priced, high quality instrument for concert band and chamber music work. After playing it for about a week now, I can honestly say that the YCL221 has really exceeded my expectations. It has a full, rich tone, the keywork is rock solid, the response, especially in the potentially problematic upper register, is clean and secure, and even the case is of the highest quality. A couple of quibbles: The mouthpiece that came with the instrument was not very good, but I replaced it with a Vandoren B44 which works much better for me. There were also a couple of minor intonation problems, specifically flatting in the throat tones around first space "F", but the Vandoren mouthpiece has helped to alleviate this, and with a bit of practice I've been able tune these notes satisfactorily. All in all I believe that this instrument is a great value and I would heartily recommend it to any potential buyer.
