The Yamaha ST5 is a great little rehearsal rig, especially for use with a portable CD player. There are enough pre-programmed sounds and user-defined sounds to entertain most players. Disappointing is the noise generated and the time-delay when using live. The noise from the phone jack into a PA system is unacceptable, and the slight delay renders attacks painfully late. I recommend this system for practice, you can't go wrong. Don't buy to use for performance.
I lived in an apartment for a bit and the ST5 was perfect for that. I plugged in a CD player, played along with Maynard, used the Silent Brass mute, and then sent the output to an old tapedeck that had fallen out of favor what with CD's and all ... Pretty nice way to spend an evening. I took it out last week and plugged into the sound system of a "jam" band. I used the wah-wah effect and 1 or 2 others with great success, fitting in with the funky worldbeat sounds that were being produced... not a studio quality set, but still a lot of fun to jam with!
