Why Buy

The elegant white-cone speakers used in the HS-series monitors deliver superlative audio performance that is further enhanced by a carefully engineered mounting system. A combination of screws and a specially designed mounting ring eliminates spurious vibration and resonance, allowing the speaker to deliver it's full sonic potential. Another feature that boosts woofer performance is a magnet selected to produce accurate, solid low-end response. The tweeter frames employ an advanced smooth-contour design that minimizes losses so that high-frequency details come through with remarkable accuracy.

"First serious mid-field monitor purchase"

I had been using an aging pair of Linaeum 2-way "hi-fi" speakers as my only demo studio monitors, supplemented by a better-than-decent pair of headphones. Obviously, ANY good bi-amped studio monitor would have been an improvement in the arena of accuracy (the Linaeum tweeter is a di-pole that radiates high frequencies in a 360-degree pattern. Sounds good, sweet spot is anywhere in the room... but not exactly accurate). When I started doing some serious listening at local music stores, the first 8" monitors I auditioned were by Samson. They were not bad, and would have cost about $200 less than the Yamahas. But once I heard several types of music on the HS80Ms, there was no comparison. Not designed to flatter, but to faithfully produce the frequency spectrum top to bottom (well; "bottom" as in 42 Hz), these are truly reference monitors. I listened to Fostex, Dynaudio, Mackie, Behringer and several others, and the "bang for the buck" factor kept leading me back to the Yamaha HS80Ms. I could have paid less, but I would have regretted it. I could have paid considerably more and barely noticed the difference. They are all I need to create the mixes I knew were in the tracks. I don't generally write reviews of the products I buy for the studio, but I though these babies deserved this mention. If you think your budget will only handle $500 for a pair of monitors... find a way to save a litlle longer, add $200 and snap these up (if you can find them locally)! You will NOT regret it. No, they are not the NS10 of years past, but I think there may be a certain "myth" factor that has grown up around that venerable model, anyway. Just listen to these and decide for yourself. When I first got the HS80Ms, I began telling friends theat these were great speakers for the money. I have since dropped the "for the money" part. These are great speakers. Period.

"Excellent neutral sound"

These speakers have truly a Excellent neutral sound. Highly recommended over M-Audio and Beringer. Acoustic control in the back is helpful to adjust to your room. I have heard new sounds in recordings that I thought I knew so well. Also Mixes improve once you work with them.
