I have been able to get some of my best recordings (including paid studio time) with this little machine. I go from the Tascam into my laptop using Cool Edit. I don't really have that great of a mic and I just use the cool edit effects but I'm pretty happy with my results. You can plug a guitar straight in to the Tascam for quick recordings but it really does sound better with a mic. àyou can only record two tracks at a time but if you are ok with spending some time layering, this thing isn't bad.

Without any reservations I would recommend this product. I'd always had trouble tweaking things to make midi and recording audio work; it always took me a while to get things just right and it was frequently frustrating enough that I just wouldn't bother. After the initial setup, there's been no problem with my XP PC. It just simply works and works flawlessly every time. Thanks, TASCAM, for making such a great product!
