Just purchased the 18" HXXplosion Crash. First let me say if you find this cymbal you have the chance to get a great deal on it since it is a closeout. Next, let me say this is not just a large crash...more a very versatile crash/ride of unique proportions. If you ride midway on the cymbal, its medium heavy weight and large hammering marks produce a very controlled warm dark ride, so much so that I now use this as my PRIMARY ride. However, strike lower and onto the edge and you get an explosion of pure musical crashiness, punchy yet colorful, with ideal decay. The bell sounds just like the 20" HHX evolution ride. Simply beautiful. They should have called this a crash ride and charge more for it, because it is worth every cent.
I got the 15 inch last x-Xmas and I love it, like it so much I will be getting a 16 and 17 inch soon. I highly recommend this line of sabians, the bell is nice and beefy and it has nice attack, its not to thick and not to thin, I like it. Its the perfect cymbal.
About 2 weeks ago I was looking at all of the new cymbals (from all the leading brands). After spending 30 minutes testing all the cymbals, I could not believe the great sound that came from this HHX Sabian Crash cymbal. It sounded like I was hitting two crash cymbals at the same time. And, this cymbal did not have that overbearing (gong) ring after the initial strike. I call this HHX cymbal the "Secret Weapon Crash" because it produces a quick full punch without having to hit very hard.
