This is hardly a complex piece of equipment, but... ...as a newbie, building up callouses is pretty critical. I'd love to build them up just by playing - but at 45-60 minutes per day, that takes a while. So, I picked this up and use it for 15 minutes per day (usually on my subway ride to work) and it really helps in the process. while the callouses on my index and middle fingers were getting good, my ring finger and, especially, the pinkie, were trailing. This has helped me build them up quickly as well. Well worth the modest investment.
