Review: DW 9702 Heavy Duty Multi Cymbal Stand

I use two of these massive stands in my setup (and that is all the stands I use for cymbals and toms). One is for my 22” ride, 18” crash, and 14” tom; the other for 16” and 18” crashes and 10” and 12” toms...I’ve gotten many compliments on this setup and other drummers are constantly asking what they are because it is so compact and easy to set up. They are great stands, and DW has some unique features with the ability to attach additional arms to the booms. The gives then great versatility because you can add cymbals arms just about anywhere...they make many sizes of arms (including telescoping) you can attach to the ends of other booms, cymbal stackers, etc. With the size of these stands, I could probably add at least another cymbal to each. My only complaint is the stiffness of the tripod base, although it is definitely larger than any other stand I’ve seen. The tubes are large and secure, and the wing nuts clamp each section very well, but the tripod metal is a little thin and flexes more than it should. That being said, I’ve never been concerned it was going to break or fall over. I own and have used a Yamaha CS945 stand that I thought was quite a bit more stable, but they don’t have some of the innovative features of the DW 9000 series. The tilters are infinitely adjustable and the handle is easy to grip and get tight without hurting your hand. The tech lock feature allows you to lock the position more securely using a drum key, but be warned: if you don’t tighten them down, they WILL fall out from the vibration of normal playing. All in all, this is a great stand, and because it can replace multiple stands and make for an easier setup, well worth the extra cost.
