The NT-2A presents with impeccable build quality though with a contemporary appearance. It replaces the NT2 with a completely revamped and stunning performance. The sound is clean with no flattery through use of electronics unlike the U87 which provides the so fluid and desirable though doctored signal. It might sound blasphemous to compare the NT-2A with the universally acclaimed U87, but it is essential to provide a comparative view with the much coveted and universally acclaimed U87 that is referred to as the gold standard. Having tried it on various sources, it would not be out of place to state that the NT-2A is a truly superlative dual-diaphragm solid state LDC. It provides a true reproduction of recorded sources without the aid of any substantial EQ'ing and is somewhat forgiving to plosives due to the use of the new K2 dual diaphragm capsule, but a pop-filter must be used nevertheless when recording loud and chesty vocals from less than 6 inches. Unlike many acclaimed LDC's, this one is equally pleasing to both female as well as male voices. Its sensitivity to all types of sound is phenomenal and offers a true reproduction of sources. The proximity effect on male vocals (cardioid mode) particularly is not that substantial (thanks again to the dual diaphragm)and hence provides an advantage in overcoming muddiness to a rather notable degree. In the bi-directional mode, this is even less of a problem and duets are very impressive. In the omni setting, the piano, strings and brass are very pleasing with a fine detail of overtones. Used in an ambient role-setting, it records room reflections without any undesirable noise. Its reproduction of lows as well as highs are pristine and the highs adds a very pleasing air to all sounds. It is particularly somewhat classic in its reproduction of the referred silkiness in recording the sax, piano and the baritone voice. There is no shrillness, and sibilance is not a limiting issue. Its overall reproduction of sonic sources is rather comparable to the Microtech M930 (no coloration like the U87). The downside (if I may use the expression) is that any serious recording must use the spider shockmount, which unfortunately does not come as standard. Its sensitivity picks up lows with a discernible reproduction even with the high-pass and pad when mounted on the provided clip. It is rather unfortunate that RODE has decided to ship this remarkable mic in a paper box without any foam or the spider shockmount as standard. For an additional sum of 100-150 $, providing the spidermount and safety packaging as standard would still make it a coveted possession. In recent times, I cannot recall any new solid state multi-pattern LDC mic (without constantly variable polar settings) that comes close to this one for reproduction of uncolored sonic sources regardless of brand or price. The NT-2A is by no means an entry-level LDC; in reality it far surpasses that. Most sincerely and highly recommended.
