Michael Kelly Dragonfly 4-String Acoustic-Electric BassThe Dragonfly 4 is Michael Kelly's latest limited edition acoustic-electric bass. It features a new vine style inlay carefully made from real pearl and abalone. The all maple body features great looking quilted maple. This exotic wood not only gives the bass a unique look, but also produces improved attack and acoustic projection. The bass has been equipped with a Fishman active pre-amp and Fishman under-saddle pickup. This includes a side mounted 3-band EQ and volume control. The Dragonfly 4 looks, plays and sounds great, get your hands on one before they are all gone. Michael Kelly basses were founded based on the concept that acoustic basses required a different approach from acoustic guitars. The fact is, most acoustic basses on the market are just over-sized acoustic guitars with a few less strings. From day one, they took a different approach. They listened to bass players and learned what they wanted improved in acoustic basses. The most consistent complaint about the "generic" basses being offered by the big acoustic guitar brands was that those basses lacked a strong, well defined tone. The notes were muddy and did not project. In 2001, they introduced one of the first production acoustic basses on the market with an all-maple body. This wood selection is not only attractive but a cornerstone of the tone that has helped them become a top acoustic bass supplier worldwide. Maple is a hardwood with a strong bell-tone. The density of maple allows it to add definition, volume and brightness to the tone of an acoustic bass. These attributes combined with the already large and round sound that comes from the large acoustic body makes for a perfect blend. This produces a unique tone that many players prefer over the other "traditional" options. Play one of these all maple basses to hear the unique tone that it can provide.

The look and sound of this bass are both beautiful. The set up left much to be desired. Frets were sharp on the ends and neck needed adjustment to eliminate buzz. Have been playing it for about 3 months. Recommend using flat wound strings; sound is better and less finger slide noise. One of the tuning gear covers popped off and had to glue it back on to get it to stay.
I don`t think I could have found a more beautiful or better sounding acoustic bass at any price than my MK. This bass is a blast to play. Unplugged, it has the volume and tone that should please anyone. Plug it in and this bass really comes alive. The Fishman pickup gives this bass the rich warm sound and range that all acoustic basses need. I have 3 Fender basses, a Thunderbird and a custom made Zion bass and my MK is a definite asset to my collection. I`ve been playing bass for over 30 years and I know a fine instrument when I play one and this one is as good as it gets for the money.
I own a mid 50s mint KBlonde Ky upright, I own a Schecter electric base, but I must say that I really enjoy playing this bass more than the other two. It has a comfortable feel, is easy to play, and has a lot of plausibility with EQ on the pick-up. I had some problems with QC on the first 2, yes TWO, guitars I got, however MK was great and took both of them back and replaced each of them with the one I have now. (Structural problem with the first, color bleeding around sound hole on the second.) Having said that; I am still completely satisfied with the construction of this guitar and you cannot in my opinion find a better sounding or more beautiful instrument for this price anywhere. I have found the bass I will use from now on, if I am not using the upright or the electric.Cheers
I've got to say that I'm in love with this bass. of all the acoustics that I tried playing before I bought this one, only one had this kind of tone, it was a Takamine, nice, but not nearly as beautiful. Some people think it's a bit too flashy, but I can't take my eyes off of it. it plays great, plugged in or not, it has a nice warm sound. Of course unplugged it's not as loud as an acoustic guitar, but it sounds great. my only problem is that when I plug into my amp I get a little feed-back, but I'm fine when I plug into our PA system. It's a great bass, and if you want to play unplugged, or even if you want a smooth, warm sounding bass, this should be your first choice.
If I was stuck on a deserted island, this is the bass I'd want with me. The deep warm sound with brilliant overtones makes it an absolute pleasure to play without an amp. Take it on stage, plug it in, and again, it sounds fantastic. Hopefully these basses will stand the test of time like my trusty 40 year old Thunderbird, but the construction feels very solid. You can see the care that went into this instrument just looking at the gorgeous inlay work. The wood is beautiful, but remember it's an acoustic, so keep it humidified. We finally have an acoustic bass, not just a 4 string guitar tuned an octave lower.
