Modern Guitar Method

Grade I
It teaches note reading and in book one, the guitarist will learn to play solos, duets, scales, and chords in the keys of C, A minor, G and E minor. The method is supplemented by a companion study book entitled Grade 1 Studies and by two different play-along CD recordings and video (VHS or DVD). Notation only. The original companion recordings feature Tommy Flint and William Bay playing on a split-track format. This means that the solo parts will be performed on the right channel of a stereo player, and the accompaniment or second duet parts will be played on the left. The student thus may play with the full recording or tune out either channel and play the missing part!

Grade II
For those who have completed Grade 1, this carefully graded second volume contains valuable guitar studies, student/teacher duets, and elementary harmony studies. The emphasis is on picking technique and position playing. This level introduces the student to alternate picking, triplets, and the keys of F, D minor, D major, and B minor, as well as second position. There are also beneficial technical studies on thirds and right-hand picking technique. A set of 2 split-track play-along CDs is available to assist the student in learning.

Grade III

Grade IV
The Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method Grade 4 contains material of extreme importance to the serious student. Studies are presented in fourth, fifth, seventh, and ninth positions. In addition, chord inversions shown are practiced for major, minor, and dominant 7th forms. Finally, a wealth of carefully arranged solos and duets is presented to further build upon the student's level of musicianship and repertoire. Elaboration upon the theory and harmony chapters contained herein will depend upon the individual instructor.

Grade V
The Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method Grade 5 is designed to enhance the chordal and solo techniques of the student. An in-depth continuation of the presentation of chord forms and inversions in various keys is included. Also, Grade 5 contains beautiful solos and duets for the serious student. The diminished and augmented chords are also presented, and inversions on each are carefully studied. Upon completion of this text, the guitar student will have make a major and important step along the road of technical mastery of the guitar.
