I got my Grand Strumstick about 1 1/2 years ago. I never learned how to play an instrument, and I figured it looked easy enough. I couldn't stop playing it. It is incredibly easy to play this thing about 5 minutes after you get it out of the box. It sounds great (like a cross between a banjo and a mandolin) You can just play melody, or learn the chords and play more. The more you learn to play, the more you can play. It's pretty versatile. It inspired me to learn guitar. I have been taking guitar lessons for about 9 months now. It's a real good tool for that, too. The guitar can be kind of boring and frustrating when you are first learning. When I got discouraged, I would put down my guitar and pick up my strumstick and just play. Also, a lot of the basics are the same for both of them (strumming patterns and fretting, etc), so I was already ahead when I picked up the guitar. My only complaint is that they don't make a hard case for it. It is sturdy enough, I suppose, but it is a bit light weight, and I am always paranoid that it will break if I am camping with it. Last week, I stuck a Markley stick-on guitar pick up on it, and it has become a whole new instrument for me! I actually went and played it at an open night at my local coffee house. I liked it. I don't know about the crowd, but nobody threw anything at me! So, if you are like me and figured you could never learn to play an instument, get the strumstick. You will be hooked. Also, if you already play an instrument, get it, and you will enjoy something different.

I have been playing for about 1 year and I love it. It is easy to learn. The hardest part is getting the coordination of your hands and eyes. The music is written for the instrument and it sounds good. I have made it electric with a pickup and a Marshell amp. So I can play either way. I play mainly melodies and change between single strings and struming. the instrument allows you to develope your own style for each song. It's just alot of fun.
