I can't imagine getting better recording sound than with this card. I don't even use a preamp, this card is so noise free. I'm not using MIDI, just the audio in/out with my guitars and the sound is perfect. Before, I plugged in via a USB audio card and the sound was noisy and weak and I just thought that I needed a preamp to quiet the noise, but I tried this card first and the sound is cd quality. I'm using a Mac, and recording with Garageband. I haven't used a mic with it yet, just plugging straight into the card, and I have no complaints. I don't even think I'll use a mic since it sounds so good.

Very few times can you spend $150 and get a great sound. The Audiophile gives you great 16/44.1 sound for just that. The 24/96 is only through the 2 channels of spdf inputs/outputs but the 44.1 is good enough for home recordings. Overall, this card is a great card for 2 channel recording!
