When I first tried out a friend's Spider Valve amp I was duly impressed with the tones coming from this amp. Great crunch, clean and metal tones. Then there is the Insane setting. It truly seemed over-the-top. Then there are all the presets that come with the amp. Some of these presets are dead on for the songs/bands they are meant to represent....and the breadth and width of these presets was amazing...all from one amp. I was sold. However, once I got this amp home, I realized one thing fast. This amp is useless for using in a band/jamming situation unless you have at least the FBV Express pedalboard. Getting from one tone to the next is impossible without it. Okay, here's the deal with these Spider III line of amps. Yes, they do have the typical Drive (Gain), Bass, Mid, Treble and Channel Volume controls you'd find on other amps. But in addition to these settings, you have a modeling knob/setting as well. When you move this knob from Clean to Twang to Blues to Crunch to Metal to Insane, in essence what the amp does is change the position of the Drive, Bass, Mid, Treble and Channel Volume controls, even though the knobs themselves do not move. This can throw a user off a bit. The same holds true when using the presets. You can go from the FORWHOMTHEBELL preset to the DEFTONE preset and the knobs won't move, but the circuitry behind those knobs changes drastically. This is particularly troublesome when the channel volume and drive of one preset is not as high as another. I can't count how many times my ears have been pierced with feedback due to this fact. However, once I got a pedalboard for the Spider Valve 112 all is good. Will I use any of the zillion presets on the Spider Valve now? Probably not. I MAY use one or two of them as starting points for one of my own presets, but that's it. I purchased the FBV Express which not only accesses ABCD channels, but also displays the amp's tuner function, (in a better interface) and also integrates a volume pedal which doubles as a functional, if not impressive wah pedal.
