Lexicon
Omega Desktop Recording Studio

Omega Studio Hardware
Differentiating itself from standard computer I/O boxes which are typically based on a patch-bay paradigm, the Omega 8x4x2 USB I/O mixer is based on a mixer paradigm and includes input, output and mixing functions that support a variety of tracking/monitoring applications while requiring no additional mixing hardware.

The Omega I/O mixer provides 8 inputs which are assignable in pairs to any of 4 simultaneous record channels featuring ultra-transparent, high-resolution analog to digital converters to capture your performance with pristine 24-bit quality. Two of the inputs feature extremely low-noise dbx mic-preamps with 48 volt phantom power and TRS insert points. Four TRS active balanced line inputs accept up to +22dBu signals to allow interfacing to either unbalanced or professional high-output level balanced equipment. Included is an S/PDIF input combined with an additional DAC for zero-latency, direct monitoring of the S/PDIF source to allow simultaneous tracking of analog and digital sources. A high-impedance instrument input is conveniently accessible on the front panel. The Omega I/O mixer provides a peak indicator for each analog input as well as an assignable bar graph meter for signal level monitoring. By monitoring the signal at the A/D converters, it avoids the problems with software-only level monitoring that can miss clipping and ruin your track. The Omega I/O mixer also includes a fully opto-isolated MIDI input to ensure that there is no annoying ground loop hum or MIDI talk-through noise common with many I/O boxes and sound cards. MIDI output has rock-solid synchronization to USB frame rate to support applications requiring critical sync.

Fantastic unit. Almost noiseless, preamps are fine, very easy to use, not hard to setup, peak meters are very helpful. Layout of knobs/meters is intuitive. Seems a very solid unit that will last a long time. Small foot print. Headphone monitoring is great. No complaints at all. Currently achieving a more professional sound with this unit than at studio's we've been to in the past.Recording software bundled with seemed ok but you can't do EQ with it so we got sonar 3 instead.

I am only 20, but I have been into studio recording since I was 17 and I have been building my studio up seriously for the past 2 years. I am a solo artist and I write all of my songs and program and play all of the instruments. My studio before the Omega consisted of a Yamaha AW4416 and Mackie HR624 monitors two JoeMeek VC6Q British Channels and two DBX 286A Vocal strips. I had a Dell P4 that I had just purchased for school when I heard about the Omega. What sold me on the Omega was the 4 simultaneous inputs. I never thought about getting into the MBox because it is limited to 2 inputs and I do my live drums with a 4 mic setup. So I got the Omega thinking it was probably too good to be true and installed it on my computer. I couldn't get it to work instantly. So within a week I contacted tech support for Lexicon and they helped me resolve the problem within a few minutes. When Spring break came I was ready to give the omega a FULL test drive and see how it compared to the Yamaha AW4416. I realized very quickly that not only was it unbelievable working on the computer screen because I could do so much quick editing, I found that the preamps in it were UNBELIEVABLE. I used to use my outboard pres for Bass drum and Snare. The DBX pres on the Omega were so clean and sweet sounding that I have since then began using them. After doing one song with the Omega with about 18 tracks on it and using the Direct X plugins that I already had, I put my AW4416 on ebay. I sold it and never turned back. I used the money from the AW to get my first Gibson Les Paul. THANKS LEXICON. Also if you haven't ever gotten into computer recording, I will give one warning. I upgraded my Ram to 1 GB and there are still plenty of clicks and pops you get from audio recording and playback on computer systems. This is an unfortunate result of not having blazing fast systems, but it isn't a problem once you hear your results. Mixing songs using sub mixes can help also on saving CPU power. GET THE OMEGA!

"I couldn't be happier with this purchase"

I was first exposed to this recording system at a jazz concert by the Merriman Trio in South Bend, In. in which they used it to do a live, direct to PC recording of the show. I was amazed how simple it was to set up and work with and couldnÆt believe it DIDNÆT cost. A few weeks later I viewed the DVD of the concert with the audio from the Omega synced to the video shot of the show and was blown away with the quality. I was looking for a desktop system to do guitar, vocal, and MIDI tracks of song ideas with my PC that was cost effective, easy to use and not some little known, little supported product. (Knowing how quickly things change in this industry). It only took an evening to set up, install the software (CuBase LE) and learn my way around the interface and software. I recommend this system for anyone looking for a super-affordable, easy to use desktop recording system that allows you to capture those magic moments when the musical inspiration hits!
