I recieved a Leblanc Sonata as an early Christmas present, and I couldn't be more pleased. The sound of this clarinet is beautiful. It's very responsive. The adjustable thumb-rest is a blessing. If you're looking for a wonderful clarinet, but can't afford a more expensive model, this is the horn for you!
This instrument is an upgrade from my plastic Vito. I see nothing wrong with the Sonata-it plays perfectly. Many spectacular clarinettists recommended it. I see why. It has a rich, full tone in all registers (chalumeau, throat notes, altissimo). However, the mouthpiece that came with it (made of plastic) was larger than the barrel's capacity. It didn't even fit on my Vito.
I got this clarinet after my initial plastic one, and it has seen me through a lot of playing. It is fairly inexpensive and produces a nice sound. However, if you plan on becoming a serious musician, it would be best to move on to a more professional model.
Truly a fine clarinet. By and far, a much better sound and feel than Selmer and Buffet. Nothing beats the deep, dark, sound of a beautiful G Leblanc France clarinet. The Sonata is the perfect clarinet for even the legit clarinetist.
I would not recommend this clarinet to anybody, unless you are a very skilled instrument mechanic. After only 2 days of having it, I got ready to play in band class and I couldn't get a single note to come out, no matter what I tried! My band director fiddled with it for a while and finally found the problem and fixed it, but the next day it broke again, except this time I could get 3-4 notes out. My band director tried to fix it again, but she couldn't figure out what was wrong! I think it is ridiculous for a brand new instrument to have to be repaired this often, so I have decided to return it and get a new one. I hope that this review can save you from making my mistake! DO NOT BUY A LEBLANC SONATA or at least if you do get one, purchase a screwdriver set with it! (one thing I would like to add is that when I was able to get notes out before it broke, even then they were very squeaky and shakey sounding, and it is not because I am a bad player because I'm not. I made All-County and I am a very high chair in my high school band.)
