Latin Percussion Galaxy Giovanni Series Conga
LP Galaxy Giovanni Series Congas are among the finest wood congas ever created. Rarely does a percussionist reach the level of excellence of Giovanni Hidalgo. He has traveled the globe with Dizzy Gillespie, "Timbale King" Tito Puente, and The Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart, and he has worked on recordings with the likes of Cameo and Paul Simon. Giovanni has become a legendary figure among his peers. While Giovanni is known primarily as a conguero, he is brilliant playing all percussion instruments. Not only is he ambidextrous, he combines his faultless technical skills with superb musicality to create a style all his own. In spite of his greatness, Giovanni is committed to being humble, loving, and appreciative of his growing public. He is always working at expanding the boundaries of his music.

"Use a Conga as a Quito"

The last review suggested that the Giovani Quinto has some questionable sounds and by installing a synthetic head might solve the problem. I say, leave the quito for those sprititual "jungle" sounding jams at the park. Use the conga as a quinto like Raul Recko does. You keep your highs and pops and can still dish out a musical sounding open note. Also, the sound resonates better from a conga being used as the quinto drum or lead high pitched drum. Perfect set up is two congas and a fat sounding Giovani tumba. Or two tumbas and a conga. Then you're rocking. By the way, I heard Raul Reco not to long ago. They are kicking up the volume on the PA more than usual and he's filling in a lot of space with that Giovani/Raul technique. I thought I saw him with some Giovani Galaxi's.

"These Giovanni drums are incredible!"

I agree that the quinto and requinto have ringing metallic overtones for some people. I use two congas for my high (quinto) and mid range and a tumba for my low end. Coincidentally, I traded my requinto and quinto with another gentleman for the two Giovanni congas. His technique/hand anatomy generated very little metallic ringing when he auditioned them.
