This straight mute is very good in a variety of situations. I have had my Jo-ral mute ever since I was 10 years old, and now I am 19, and it still looks like new. the corks stay on pretty sturdily.

I swear by my JoRal - clean, clear sound with no distorted intonation. Since it doubles as my practice mute, I play more hours muted than open; and whenever I play in a muted ensemble setting, my sound is always the best of the group. Going to order another JoRal for the new picc I just acquired.

This is by far the best loud mute on the market! Intonation, sound and resistance are great. Loud muted solos can be played easily over the orchestra without breaking the sound or letting your eyes pop out of your head. Also softer passages keep their metallic sound, but it is not possible to play any softer than mezzo-piano, because of the penetrating effect of the mute. Getting rid of the felt cap opens up the sound even more. For a slightly more civilized effect, buy the copper bottom version.
