Holton Model ST307S Maynard FergusonTrumpetMaynard Ferguson's newest personal-model trumpet, the ST307, has been called his "best trumpet sound yet!" The newly designed full-length mouthpipe combined with the new reversed tuning slide allows the most dynamic playing freedom ever. The ST307's full high register is astonishingly easy to play, and it has a pleasing, vibrant feel with a well-centered sound. Maynard said, "I love the sound I get on this instrument! The upper register is as fat and big as the middle and lower, causing no thinned-out sound upstairs."The Maynard Ferguson ST307 trumpet is tuned to Bb. Monel valves. Includes case and mouthpiece.

I didn't want a Xeno or Strad - they are "sausage factory" (mass production)instruments. I took advice from Rich Wetzel and also my friends in the UK. I opted for a ST307 lacquer and teamed it with a John Lynch Asymmetric 3c-544 mp (Gold Plated). The combination has less edge than the Conn BUT the horn sings. It is incredibly free blowing. Valves have good fluid action. Slides are perfect. Absolutely no problems. I gigged it with an 18 piece Big Band the same day it was delivered. NICE.
This is a free-blowing horn with that .468 bore. Everything else feels tight and restrictive. High range is astonishingly ease to play while keeping a centered tone. Maynard's range with Doc's style!
I purchased this horn about two years ago. It is everything it was told to be. It can scream at the high register.I like the free blowing of the horn.I stand out above the other trumpet players when playing. I play jazz, big band, municipal band, pep band. I use a Warburton mouthpiece with a 2SV or 2M cup and a KT backbore. This horn prefers the KT backbore.
I have the silver plated model of this horn. I went to this horn after using a Yamaha student model, and trying (not buying) several other horns. This horn was the best, beating out even the Yamaha Xeno, which was $600 more expensive. I love this horn. If you buy it, you will never consider buying another horn again.
The Holton ST307 trumpet has a flawless finish with absolutely no imperfections. The slides all work easily and smoothly. The first valve thumb U-pull is a joy to use, it is so smooth. The Monel valves were absolutely the best I have ever experienced, right out of the box. The third valve water key, not standard on many other pro horns, is a real plus for trumpet players who put a lot of spit thru their horns. The Holton blows freely and with a warm, rich tone. I have had at least three other professional trumpets during my lifetime, none embodying all the qualities of the Holton ST307. I recently sold an almost new Bach Stradivarius Model 37 trumpet which couldn't compare to the Holton, point for point. Try it, you'll buy it!
