I just bought a VDC mouthpiece because I wanted one for Solo and Ensemble this Saturday. I started on an MDC and I could play good, but I thought the mouthpiece was just too small. My band director recommended a VDC. So, I bought one from this site at a great price by the way. I love it. It is comfortable and I can play at at wider range up and down. Mostly down though. I think that is better because I play lower notes in my Duet and Quintet. Well, that is what I think of the Holton Farkas mouthpiece.
Very good descriptions of the different cup depths
Holton Farkas mouthpieces represent a fabulous line of professional mouthpieces. I learned on an MDC, an later moved to a MC. After a while I swtiched to the Conn 7BW that came with my Conn 8D horn, but I swtiched back to the MC for the tone and control it gave me. The Farkas line is great because it gives the options of so many different depths especially with the SC for high playing and the VDC for that rich horn sound. I highly suggest these mouthpieces for any player.
Another great product by a great company. Overall I would have to recommend the DC in the Farkas line due to its flexibility. The XDC and the MC are either too shallow or too deep to play the standard horn range. With the DC I am able to get 3 octaves solid and am able to hit 5 different Cs. This is a great product.
I originally started on a Holton Farkas VDC, during my freshman-sophomore years of high school, which was adequate for the time, but I didn't like the thin rim of the mouthpiece. I later tried the Holton Farkas XDC. At first, the cup depth of the mouthpiece seemed enormous, but the rim was slightly thicker and easier on my lips than the VDC. After becoming use to the deeper cup of the mouthpiece, low notes down an octave below "F" were very clean and articulate. Any note above high "F" is more difficult to slot with this mouthpiece, and may be airy at first, but are very articulate and strong after practice. The Holton Farkas XDC, combined with my pre-UMI, mid seventies King Eroica,(previously owned by hornist, Leonard Rivenberg, custom made and used in the Columbus Symphony). I have a great, dark, horn tone for both solo and ensemble, wind ensemble, and chamber brass. I had a Conn 8d during my sophomore year, but later bought the King, which I prefer over the Conn for its darker sound and better intonation. I must warn that this mouthpiece is very deep and requires more air and embouchure control. I would only recommend it to the more advanced, serious horn player.
