I just received my new 279 a few days ago and I am definitely impressed! I have owned 3 Holtons, a Conn, a Getzen and a King and this is, by far, the best horn I've owned. All slides are a perfect fit, the valves are super-tight and the sound is incredible! Definitely a class act and WW&BW's fantastic price makes the deal even sweeter.
This is a pretty good horn. All it needs is a capable player. Its tone is good and doesn't have a problem with highs or lows. It doesn't have the sound quality of something like a medium throat Conn 8dr, but its keys are a lot smoother, and requires less work. All in all, this is an excellent horn.
Even though I am only an 8th grader, I have been playing the school's Holton double horn for two years. It has an excellent tone quality and sound. It also looks real beautiful. I encourage anyone getting a french horn to get a Holton!
I got this horn back in the early 70s. To this day, other hornists offer to buy it from me...so they, too, can get the incredible tone it provides. This is one whale of a horn!
I startes playing an H-179 3 yeas ago. The instrument belonged to my school system, so I did not get to experience the joy of the instrument year round. I find the water key's placement to be quite convenient, but I found two or three other locations where one would be of good use. In the end, it turned out to be an excellent horn except for the fact that the thumb valve is fixed rather than being ajustable.
