"Roc to Gibson: Nice Bass - NOT!"

Dear Music123. Recently I played this bass at another local music store. I was unimpressed. To put it bluntly, in my book, SG stands for mediocre bass. Also in my book, mediocre starts with S, and bass starts with G. This just isn't a very good gbass.

"EB-3, the good, the bad and the top-heavy"

I owned an EB-3 for awhile. First of all, I was surprised at the sound, warm, fat and clear bottom end and acceptable trebles. It played pretty easily and covered a lot of ground - rock, country, jazz, etc., although I didn't think it did any one thing fantastically. My main problems were twofold: 1. it was top heavy and (even though I've played an extra-long bass most of my life, and this one is merely long scale), I felt I had to stretch my left hand out to reach 1st position. It wasn't comfortable at all. 2. the bass pickup reacted like a microphone. There is a certain sound that a magnetic pickup makes when you tap on it, and another when a mic is tapped - this sounded like the latter and had a propensity to feedback at high volume in smaller spaces. I decided not to keep it. I hope this helps.

The first time I picked up an "SG Bass" was in a record store that sold some cheap guitars too. It was the Epiphone EB-0 model and I wasnt impressed, but I decided to give it a chance and check out its big brother. I was amazed. The short-scale neck allows you to bring out the bass that's going on in your head into your instrument. The pickups are excellent quality and sound great. This bass is also very light, so it would be easy to rock out with it. I would recommend this bass to almost anyone who doesn't want to play what everyone else is playing, but still wants the high quality you get from Gibson. Check this one out ASAP.

The SG is a must try for anyone considering a short scale bass. Gibson hit a home run with this. The neck is slim & narrow; nice low action. This is a very resonant bass - even sounds good unplugged. The TB humbucker (neck position pickup) is able to produce super deep bass with great presence and punch (deep like the old sidewinder, but without the mud). The mini humbucker adds nice crisp highs and gives the bass the ability to produce a variety of great sounds without honky midrange. The workmanship is flawless. The Heritage Cherry looks great. Absolute perfection in a short scale bass. Thank you Gibson!
