Nothing can match the well-played look and feel of a favorite Gibson SG from the 1960s or '70s -- except today's Gibson SG Special Faded electric guitar. The "Worn" finish make these guitars feel like old friends, while humbucking pickups bring the SG Special to a level of performance the originals never had.

Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar
The Gibson Faded SG Special is an electric guitar that maintains the tradition of looks, functionality, and value for which the SG guitar is known. Under its attractive faded finish, the Faded Special SG is still the traditional SG, with mahogany body and neck, Tune-O-Matic/stopbar bridge, and alnico 490 pickups. The guitar's faded finish gives it the look of an electric that started its rockin' days in the '60s.

A Little SG History

In 1961, the Les Paul was redesigned with a thinner body and 2 sharp cutaway horns that made the upper frets more accessible while lowering production costs. The new guitar was popular, but Les Paul the guitarist behind the original Les Paul did not like it and asked to have his name removed. Gibson renamed the model the "SG" which was short for "solid guitar". Though Les Paul's name was officially removed from the model in 1961, the plastic Les Paul nameplates (positioned between the rhythm pickup and fingerboard) were in abundance in the Gibson factory and SG models having these nameplates were built and sold by Gibson up to the end of 1963. SGs have been the choice of world-class artists such as Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, and Angus Young.

I've had this SG for five years now, and the guitar has come a long way from its original sound, look, and feel. If you adjust the pickups, you'll find a variety of tones; I used the factory setup for a long time, until I recently lowered the lead pickup and raised the neck for more LP sounds. Anyway, it's a one trick pony in the wrong hands, but can do many things in the right ones. Any style, any song, any gig, any amp: It sounds great. Bright, dark, and anywhere in between.

After playing several kinds of sg's, I went with the faded. I love how the unfinished neck feels, and the open coil humbuckers sound every bit as good as "traditional" Gibson humbuckers, if not better. I love how the faded red finish looks. its not nearly as faded as the Les Paul fade, but its not quite glossy. Its a perfect middle. Great looks, great sound, and great playability. I like this guitar better than any other sg.

I truly love this guitar. I've had it for 2 weeks, and out of all my axes I like this one the best. It looks really, really nice. the fretboard is especially pretty, the crescent moons on the ebony looks killer, and if you've not played on an ebony fretboard, you are missing out! It's like rosewood, 'cept 10x better. and it sustains forever. The faded cherry finish sets everything off nicely. This thing is HOT when it comes to tone. As any Gibson man knows, you can get any type of sound out of them. You want Punk? Metal? Jazz? Classic Rock? this guitar can really do it all, seriously. the neck pickups are nice and thick, reminiscent of a les paul, and the bridge pickups sound like an SG should! the bridge pickup has some serious bite to it. The neck is a bit thick ( I'm used to the pencil neck of my 71' SG) and takes some getting use to, but after a couple of hours playing it, it feels very natural and smooth, and for the price, you really can't beat it. It has fantastic tone, looks hot and plays smooth. I am thoroughly enjoying this instrument! You will too.

I love this guitar. The ebony fretboard is superb. I got the dot inlays. I didn't care for the crescent moon because they don't do the last few fret markings. I absolutely love the faded brown. Nice and grainy. The body on is only as thick as the neck!!! I am not exaggerating! The craftsmanship is superior. Did you ever buy a cheaper guitar and notice how the pole pieces never line up with the strings? or how the pickup rings are flimsy and don't really hold the pickups how they are supposed to? Some people say these are over priced. If you compare features you could say that, but they don't even compare to the quality of a Gibson. Besides that, take pride and buy an American made Guitar.

Before I bought this guitar I was a fender man. I was looking for a guitar to go with a song I had written. My fender wasn't coming anywhere close to the sound I needed. I even tried the Les Paul we had in the studio. I thought the sound was too warm and I needed something a little bit more heavy and nasty to roll with. A friend of mine told me I needed an sg. I wasn't too sure about getting a different Gibson model other than the Les Paul we already had. Then I found out that the sg was used by bands like ac/dc and black Sabbath and that was the sound I was hunting for the whole time. I always heard Gibson were made poorly, but when I got it I was really surprised. It looks and feels good, but the sound, thats what stole it away.
