Gallien-Krueger 400RB-IV Bass Amp Head400RB-IV
Extreme Sound! It all begins with the transformer. G-K uses toroids. They cost more, but are light weight, do not induce hum into pickups, and really pack punch! They generate the tremendous currents required to maintain cone control at high power levels (reduced farting), by using extra output devices, and sophisticated SOA protection circuits. This also costs more, but will deliver up to ten times the current of other comparable amplifiers. Finally, a temperature controlled, variable speed fan, keeps everything cool, so when push comes to shove, and you really need to lean on your amp, you've got... Extreme Sound!

Delivers all the Gallien Krueger tone in an inexpensive package. It strangely seems to delivers more power/DB than a lot of higher wattage amps I tried.
I'm using the 400RBIV 280 watt amp, 410SBX cab, and an ART Tube Pac Preamp w/ a fender standard jazz bass. What a great rig this is for practice and gigging, and the heart and soul is the 400RBIV. I've had other amps, but this one is the best. The tone controls are great I can move from earth moving low end to very punchy and responsive slap and pop bass. The contour control is my favorite, it gives my sound that extra push. People don't listen to my bass lines they FEEL them. The DI feature is a life saver because ever though my rig couldn't fill huge venues, I could just hook up to the PA system. It's great! Plus it has optional post or pre sends so if I don't trust the engineer I can control my tone (which has happened many times). The mute tuner output is great for tuning on stage without annoying the crowd. Sorry I can't tell you about the effects loop, I haven't tried it out yet. Very little noise coming from the amp even when cranked, but I only take it to 75% max to be safe. I suggest getting a tube preamp also, big gain in tone with out big gain in price. And I'm looking to add a 1 X 15 cab to increase the power of this rig. This would work fine for a semi-serious bassist looking for small/medium gigs and practicing.
