I bought this recorder as a companion to my MR8HD. This device works nearly identical to that other recorder, so I can switch between them without having to retool my brain. That said, I would have purchased this recorder even if I didn't already have other Fostex products. This is a very handy recorder for portable use. While it's not one of those hand-held portables, it has the advantage of 8 tracks instead of just 2 or 4. The built-in mic is reasonable quality, but for really good recording you need an external mic. I am amazed at how long the batteries last, even with phantom power turned on. This is not one of those pocket-recorders. This is a field recorder. You will need a pair of headphones and at least 1 mic for good recording. But it is small enough that it is easy for me to package it up and take camping with me to record in the woods. It records 2 tracks at a time. If you are guitar player/singer, you can plug your guitar directly into input 1 and a mic into input 2. By bouncing tracks to new folders, you can record more than the specified 8 tracks. This process is pretty easy, once you get the hang of it. Or you can download the tracks into a PC and edit/mix in another software package. If your PC has a CF card reader (like mine has) you don't actually need to use the USB interface. Just pull the CF card out and pop it into your PC. You will still need the the Fostex software that reformats the recorded data into standard WAV files for the PC. But the software works either with the USB interface or a CF card reader.
