You have to put on the bridge additions to raise the sting height... Then run around 14's on it.. I ONLY use this guitar for slide.. With usually open G tuning... I think Fender tries to market this as a Spanish style player and a slide.. Actions a little high out of the box for playing straight and a little too low for playing clean slide.. Once you decide to make the plunge and set it up for slide...I can only tell you acoustically it booms. Really nice "Great Speckled Bird", "Wabash Cannon Ball" and good for slow blues as well... But plug this guy in and mix the body pickup to the Fishman, just right, This is a nasty Delta Blues Honker..Love Mine...
I played the resonator through a tube-solid state amp and found it sound to be outstanding. I can see, depending on the style, where the guitar would be lacking in tone. However, this is a very well crafted guitar and a beautiful sound for old school blues.
From reviews of the non electric version, I thought this would be a possible dual usage guitar as a resonator and actual dobro. It most definately did not meet either goal. I found it to be extremely weak in sound and amplification as a resonator. The dobro usage, after using appropriate bridge addition, also did not have any where near positive sound quality. This would not be a favorable choice over either of the actual types. I love Fender products, have many, but this was the least impressive. I must admit, however, it is a visually beautiful guitar.
