Taking its roots from legendary British guitar amplifiers, the English Muff'n recreates their majesty and classic tone with spot-on accuracy. Rather than approximating these amps like "emulator" products on the market, the English Muff'n employs vacuum tubes, including one glovered 12AY7 cascading into another, to produce true Brit-valve sounds that are full of richness and natural saturation. You'll come to rely on this amp-in-a-box.a bloody masterpiece!

Electro-Harmonix Classics English Muff'n Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal
Vintage "British" Vacuum Tube Pre-Amp

The English MUFF'n consists of both a gain stage and a tone control section. The tone control section contains high (treble), midrange, and low (bass) tone controls, which form a traditional "tone stack," as used in vintage pre-amp sections of '60s British guitar amps. A "tone-stack" refers to how an amplifier is voiced for EQ and Gain in the pre-amp section. All three EQ controls are interactive, letting the player dial in anything from hard-driving modern distortion to the sweet sustain of classic vintage models.

As in the classic British amplifiers, the sweetness and power of the tone is a combination of working the preamplifier gain against the Post gain. The more you turn up the preamplifier, the more saturation of the tubes there is. This results in anything from a sweet and subtle blues overdrive all the way to the classic British stack cranked to the max.

It is easy to set up the Muff'n to give you that sweet Brit sound with an emphasis of any part of the EQ curve. For example, dipping the midrange produces the classic scooped sound. As always, experiment to achieve your own unique sounds. For the first time, you really do have the classic British sound. It is totally dependent on the vacuum tubes. No modeling, no DSP, just the classic sound, which was totally created by vacuum tubes just like the originals.

First of all its a lot lighter than it looks. The wooden box it comes in is cool too. I have acquired a pile of cheap little practice amps such as Orange, Marshall mini stacks, Nifty fifty etc. The tubes seem to warm up the tone of these amps and I prefer the English Muffin over the distortion on the amps. As for my Real Tube Amps such as a 67 Fender Bassman and even a Blues Jr The Muffin works well as an alternative to cranking the volume up until the speakers break up. I also use a Maxon 808 so between the two I can have a lot of options. Electro harmonics seem to be a bit pricey.

I am very satisfied with this pedal - for a tube pedal it has very low noise, great tones and an endless array of possibilities. Strat players without a tweed amp beware though -this coupled with my 65 Reissue twin was harsh and difficult to reign in, but with my hollow body equipped with filtertrons and coil taps the walls were melting around me.

Love this pedal! It has solid construction and great tone. Helps to really add character to solid state amps, and is another good source of crank for your full tube amps. EH pedals are pricey...but you do get what you pay for, if you want cheap distortion buy a cheap pedal.
