I'm actually a classical guitar player, but lately I've been in the mood to play as I did in the 1970's. Since my generation invented the need for distortion and sustain, I'm an authority on vintage sound. This is a great box. You can sound like Hendrix, Santana, Van Halen, and Whoever. The nature of distortion, sustain effects, (depending on the type of music) is known to make you sound like a much better guitar player than you actually are. So, turn up the volume and your neighbors may think you're the best guitar player on this planet. The sustain can be long enough to finish a beer, and the distortion (practically speaking), is great. It's battery friendly, and made OK. I think it's really cool. I'm glad I bought it!
The Electro Harmonix Big Muff Distortion and Sustainer is the greatest distortion pedal ever made. It allows for a variety of different music styles to use distortion. If you want fat and thick distortion, turn the sustain knob all the way up. For just a little, put it up just a little. It's that easy right out of the box. I play Punk/Grunge (Grunge is hard punk rock slathered in distortion) and this pedal is perfect. I even played a Gibson ES-175 through it and it sounded great. Amazing quality and sound. Throw away all of your other distortion pedals and get this one, its awesome.
The Russian version is the way to go. It's cheaper and (in my opinion) sounds better. In terms of the distortion tone, yeah sure, it is a bit limited, but it is well worth adding to your bag of tricks. It brings something magical to your tone. I know a few guys that play a big muff, but for some reason we all have a different tone. It brings different things to different people. You can open up a hallway of doors with it if you try. It's only limited to those with a limited mind. There is no do-all distortion. Just like there is no all-flavor ice cream.
This pedal does take a little tweaking out of the box to get a good sound but once you do, it's great! Thick fat distortion that lets the harmonics come through with plenty of sustain. Great tone for leads or rhythm.
