This horn is wonderful. [Almost] Everything about this horn is great, from its design to its sound. The valves work beautifully, the tone is amazing. I might just be a high school trumpet player, but I know a good horn when I play one, and this is one of them. The only thing is that the first horn I got had a defect and the silver plate wore off in a spot on the bell. But WWBW was awesome and promptly sent me a shiny new one free of charge.
I tried them all, and had to come back to the Conn 1B series. The Conn 1B-SP just sounded right. They give me that Dizzy Gillespie tone that I love so much. The 1B-SP is a true jazzman's trumpet, and beautiful to boot!
This trumpet is the only trumpet I have owned with the ability to do it all. I recently bought a 1BRSPG which has the rose brass bell. The rose brass bell is fantastic and really warms up the tone, much less resonant. I have since played in a pro small jazz ensemble on a Monette B2 prana mouthpiece. To anyone who reads this, I SOLD MY CAR TO GET THIS HORN!!! I advise you do the same and also invest in Monette mouthpieces. This trumpet is so pleasurable to play that I would advise anyone out there to trust the Conn Vintage series before dismissing it. The Yellow brass bell is superb and gives great all-round satisfaction, the Sterling bell gives classical tone second to none, but the rose brass bell is ideal for anyone who loves the sound of a full and rich tone. LOVE IT!!!
I am a professional musician and have been playing trumpet for over 35yrs. Last year, after spending many months horn shopping, I was becoming quite frustrated. It seemed that no matter how many horns I played, I just couldn't find the right fit for me. My horn repair guy suggested I try the new Conn Vintage one. Boy am I glad I did! From the moment I picked this trumpet up, it just felt right, and when I started playing it...WOW! It was head and shoulders above the rest! It slots so well it almost plays itself and it's versatility is incredible. Now I am not going to slam the competitors, but DO NOT buy a new horn before you play this one!
I have a Conn Vintage One 1BR (rose brass bell) and it is the best horn I have yet to play. Not only is a beautiful, but it sounds great too. this trumpet performs well under pressure, when I marched with it, if I needed to pop out a high C or E(remember I was marching 5.5 miles in the rain) I just did, nothing else to it, I blew air and out came music. I recommend this for concert, as this has a dark sound contrary to the typical marching bright style, and get either a 1BR or 1BS, they ring differently and blend well, usually making the whole band sound better, also, I would use a high end oil and grease, Hetman oils work great, and get a valve guard for it. the Bach leather ones fit fine but make sure you soak them in water to get the dye out of it, you don't want any black spots, do you? In my opinion, this trumpet is the best.
