I have tried this horn out on lease from a local instrument shop (however, I found it would be much cheaper and easier to purchase it here) and I couldn't be more pleased!!! It has a beautiful sound and it is a high enough quality to meet my standards as an accomplished horn player! I will be purchasing the Conn 8DR within the next day or so and it plays with just the same remarkable qualities, but with a darker, deeper sound. I would recommend these horns to any serious player.
I tried several 8D's out, and found them to be an OK horn, but not worth purchasing. They just did not do it for me. Their sound was not that impressive, the volume level was not that different from other horns, the bell was too wide for me to hand-stop, and the thumb lever was in a very awkward position for me. Also, the pitch center was very wide; it was easy to crack notes. In the end, I ended up purchasing a very similar horn. You can still get the same "famous" sound from other models, and for substantially cheaper. Like I said before - I found the 8D to be an OK. horn, but not good enough to warrant purchasing.
The Conn 8D is a great horn that has a superior tone and is like a different beast compared to the Conn 6D. The tone produced is wonderful and the valve and trigger action is great. I have yet to see another horn that is as good (for lack of a better word) as this horn. I would recommend this horn to anyone who is looking for a professional model horn that plays like nothing else. Absolutely wonderful!!
I have been playing my Conn 8D for 4 years, and I have never heard anything else that I like better. The orchestra I play in has different horns and the only one I like is the Conn that I have. The first player doesn't play a Conn but she used to, and I think her tone would be better if she did play a Conn. I think that they are awesome, if you keep your valves oiled they will be twice as good. Hope to see you with a Conn!
I love the Conn 8d! Compared to all other horns I have played the 8d is by far the best and the easiest to play. It has a rich, full sound, it's great!
