Cerveny CBB 681-4M Tuba - Instrument Only
The Cerveny CBB 681-4M 4 Rotary Valve BBb Tuba is very similar in appearance and performance to the famous Miraphone 186 horn. The 681 horns have much projection from a larger bore and increased resonance from the brass used to construct the instrument. With a fine European sound, the 6814M BBb tuba is available in lacquer finish.

"It's not a bad little tuba"

If you are looking for the classic German rotary sound this is one of the least expensive ways to get it. All of the Cerveny 681 tubas that I have played on have all been pretty consistent. They are made out of fairly thin brass so I wouldn't give one to a student that would neglect his/her tuba. I think that in the hands of an average High school level player it would be a fine horn. The intonation is good, it doesn't have any really funky sounding registers. If you can afford it I would buy the Cerveny 686 model, just for the larger bell. It seems to have a little warmer sound, with less edge.

For the price you really cant beat this horn. Good sound - fairly even intonation throughout. Its was a great! horn for me to get back into playing after years off. I would point out that the metal on this horn is thin and dings and dents very easily. It also collects "water" in odd places that are not always easy to clear.

"Not a bad all-around horn"

For the money, this really isn't a bad horn. It responds reasonably well in the low and high registers while maintaining fairly consistent intonation. However, once you begin to get into notes beginning with high F & beyond above the staff, intonation begins to suffer somewhat; for that kind of playing, you really need to move on to a CC or F tuba. Also, the metal is so thin that it very easily dents; not a horn for beginners, that's for sure.

I bought my 861-4 in 1994 and I am still very happy with it. This is a very good instrument, I have played the Mirafone 186 and they are close in playing. My only complaint would be that the finish wore off faster than I would have liked in spots.

This horn is a great bargain. Cerveny has always been famous for their great tubas, and I think they have outdone themselves in offering such a fine instrument at an affordable price. This horn has a nice deep European tone and lightning fast rotary valves with an adjustable thumb ring to make the horn more comfortable to play. Very even intonation in all registers and at all volume levels. And the workmanship matches what tubists have come to expect from the more expensive Cerveny horns. Don't pass this horn by!
