DescriptionThe Vintage R13, patterned after the famous R13s of the 1950s, uses many elements not found on the modern R13s. There are no metal tenon rings, several tone hole placements have been adjusted to improve tuning, and the bell is 1mm longer, producing a very fluid clarion register. This instrument comes standard with an adjustable thumb rest, two barrels (one conical / one cylindrical), and a beautiful calfskin double case with plush interior.
HistoryIn 1996, during a tour of the US and Canada, Rene Lesieux, Buffet's Research and Development Manager, fielded many requests from players who wanted a clarinet with the same feel and sound quality of the 1950's R13s. Had one of the original R13's for years. It was the best Clarinet ever! The tone was untouchable and the key response very nice. Looking at replacing it with a Vintage R13. (Someone broke into our house and stole my R13 - Serial Number 90896.) If the same happened to you, would you replace it with a Vintage?
Having played on R13's and R13 prestige over 20 years, I was hesitant to change - even for another Buffet. But when I went to replace my old R13 prestige, one of the clarinets given to me to try was a Vintage. The Consistency, the tuning throughout the instrument was so apparent, from the very first that I very quickly stopped comparing the differences between the other models and instead focused on how much better the Vintage played than any other instrument I had played. Worth the effort to try.
The intonation, warmth and response of this clarinet make me think I am a better clarinetist than I really am. I am in awe at the way this horn responds to my every whim. It just makes playing what I want that much easier. Beautiful to look at (great,tight wood grain), beautiful to hear (crisp, fluid, tone) and beautiful to feel in my hands (incredible, right-on, key placement). It came with a double case and I am not a fan of double cases but all in all it is a great bargain. I am not sure about the Vintage being "just like vintage R-13's" but it is an exceptional clarinet just on it's own.
A perfect clarinet! I have tried the E11 and the modern R13, but this is a wonderful instrument. It has a much deeper and beautiful tone than any other clarinet I have ever played. Very Highly Recommended!!!!!
This clarinet is awesome, with a killer sound and great even tone. It was the best Buffet I played when looking for a new clarinet, and I don't think I could ever go back!
