This is a great mouth piece. It's not about the looks but the way it helps you. This is an awesome mouthpiece.
It has a very open sound. Great for all ranges on trombone. I'm popping a high D out easily now and pedal tones are easy and full. It does take a lot more air than a 6 1/2 AL but it is worth it. Great for solos, marching band, jazz, and ensemble use. I don't recommend it for beginners because it does take air support.
This is one excellent mouthpiece. A must for every TRUE bass trombone player. Low and pedal tones resonate beautifully and with great sound. It is more difficult to reach high notes, though. A beginning bass trombone player should get a 1-1/2G to get the feel, and progress to the 1G when you are ready! I prefer this to any other bass trombone mouthpiece out there -- including the custom professional mouthpieces which can cost over $1000!
I unwittingly bought a 1G. Oh My God! I now play low F's with freakish power! Perfect for bass or low parts. the only issue I have with it is the rim.
As most people know, you can't tell someone what mouthpiece to use. Everybody is different. The Bach 1G was great choice for me. I was fighting the Greg Black 1 1/2G I was given when playing low, I needed a wider cup and rim diameter and this mouthpiece was just the right fit. For me this mouthpiece plays evenly in all registers with little tuning issues, it is nice to be able to play low B with very little effort, and it opened up my Bach 50B3O giving me a glorious sound/tone in all registers. For me it takes very little effort to play on the 1G but I worked my way down over many years starting with a 2G/Yamaha 58. You need to have a very strong embouchure to play on this mouthpiece, I love it and would recommend it to anybody who needs a bigger mouthpiece than a 1 1/2G. Choosing a mouthpiece is easy, but the right one is hard to find, and this one happens to be the right one for me.
