Starting out on a Bach strad 37 made some time back in the mid 70's it sounded ok, but was really worn out and played a bit stuffy to me as well as everyone who played the thing. Anyway, before joining any college band I made a trip to Chuck Levins in Washington to try and pick out a new horn. My father (who is a professional and plays a Yamaha Z) and I sat in a practice room for about 2 hours. I really had my heart set on a Schilke, but after trying about 12 different horns (Kanstul, Yamaha, Schilke, Getzen, Bach) I as well as a my Dad came to the conclusion that I sounded the best on the Bach Strad LR180 w/ #43 bell and #25 leadpipe. For some reason the Schilke lacked the tone of the bach. However, the difference from a new Bach 37 and what I bought was like night and day. The 43 bell is bighter and cuts through better, the response is great due to the lightweight body and the reverse leadpipe construction. So all in all your getting the best of both worlds in my opinion. I'v had it for 3 years now and I love it.
