Alvarez MD80 Masterworks Series Dreadnought Acoustic GuitarAlvarez Masterworks are designed to inspire performance. You'll be moved by the beautifully balanced tone of the MD80 with all solid woods - Mahogany back/sides, Engelmann Spruce top. Maple body binding, abalone shell rosette, nickel die-cast tuners. Dreadnought is the most common size and, arguably, the most versatile of the entire guitar family. The name "dreadnought" comes from the old British battleships, which sailors called "dread-nots." Typically featuring larger bodies, dreadnoughts project well, have exceptional bass response, and are ideal for general accompaniment and flat-picking. Even unamplified, a dreadnought will generally be loud enough for a small- to medium-sized audience

I had been looking for an acoustic guitar for quite a while before I came across this amazing guitar. It had everything I wanted and more: great tone, great and very easy action across the fret board, all solid wood, a trustworthy name, and a great price for an all wood guitar. You have to play it to believe it! It simply out performs or plays in parallel with those high end guitars that are just jacking up the price for the name. My advice is to make this your choice. I'm sure glad I did.
The highs and lows are great and the action right out of the box is amazing.
I have to say the Alvarez MD80 is one of the best guitars I have ever played for the price. Right out of the nice hardshell case that was included, this guitar begs to be played. The action is low and the sound bright and clear as you would expect from a mahogany guitar. If you use a tortoise shell pick the sound is very mellow. The solid woods were book matched and had beautiful grains with a perfect shiny finish. I can't stop looking at how beautiful the wood grain patterns are! The new 2004 model has a new bridge that only Alvarez offers. It's almost like the bridge on the much more expensive Alvarez Yari models. The guitar comes without a pick guard, however a black Alvarez pick guard is included and can be installed with a simple peal and stick method. No matter if you are a pro or someone who just likes to pick, you will be impressed with this guitar. Also the people at Music123 are the best! They are really polite and attended to my every need.
I purchase a new Epiphone DR-500M, all solid spruce/mahogany wood acoustic a short time ago. But later by chance I found and played this new Alvarez MD-80. If I had seen this Alvarez model the first time, I would have definitely chose it over the Epiphone I bought. I'm soon giving my Epiphone DR-500M to a grandson for a birthday gift, and getting a new Alvarez MD-80. It's a great guitar in this price range category.
This guitar is very balanced and bright. The bass is great; tight, not boomy. Nice mid-range. I put medium Elixir Nanowebs (comes with Elixir Nanoweb lights) on it, and it got even better. Nice action, Tayloresque neck and playability. You might consider a new nut and saddle just for intonation purposes. It's almost right on, but if you play with others (especially pianos and keyboards) it will be more noticeable. I upgraded to gold-plated Grover Rotomatics 18:1, and it's pretty. I also installed a gold strap button on the treble side of the heel. I'm getting an LR Baggs Element pickup installed this week. If you play multiple styles (like in a worship setting), this is great for all of them; especially those nice open chords all the way up and down the neck. Oh, did I say loud? NICE volume. Would have been just as happy if I had spent $1500. Easily.
