Today, more an more pros are using the HD24 for high-quality audio capture, while freeing up computer resources for more processor-intensive plug-ins, virtual instruments, and mixing. The onboard 40GB hard drive can be easily extended with low-cost IDE computer drives that are as affordable as traditional ADAT tape on a per-track basis. 2 hot-swappable media bays provide convenient access to the recording drives and allow quick backup from one hard drive to another. The only HD recorder that includes ADAT optical format and ADAT Sync to work efficiently with existing ADAT systems. 44.1kHz and 48kHz internal sample rates, slaved to external word clock, with 96kHz and 88.2kHz option. 12 tracks at 88.2 or 96kHz through the digital ins. 24 tracks at 44.1 or 48kHz through the digital or analog ins. 103dB A/D/A converters. I've been using this machine for over two years now and never had a problem.
The review from the last guy is very technical, and that's cool, but I am not really all that technical, and that is the main reason I love this machine. It just WORKS. I hit play and record, and I am recording. It does all kinds of cool editing stuff to, but I don't really use it all that much...I just punch in again...It's actually FASTER than my friend that uses Cakewalk. Plus, this thing has NEVER crashed. I used to use ADAT's and they were cool at the time, but they were also a pain in the rear (not locking up, always need to be cleaned, drop outs, etc), but this thing is GREAT. NO maintenance, always works, easy back up. I HATE using computers to record with. I want to make music, not figure out a computer system.
I bought the HD24 a few years ago now and its been great. I've had little to no problems at all with it. The only thing that comes to mind is it didnt recognise an IDE drive I tried to use once. It was 300gig drive (maxtor I think), but aside from that its been flawless. Nowdays I find a lot of things fall short on what the marketing says. Many things are plastic junk and barely do what is advertised, or you need updates to try and get it to work properly etc But thats not the case with this unit. HD24 sounds good and works like you expect. If you want a simple hard disk recorder that operates like old school tape based units this is your answer. I can also atest to it being able to handle very high levels without distortion.
Great piece of gear, easy to use, easy to set up. Very versatile, the only improvement I would make is upping the ethernet port speed (10/100), it took 3+ hours to transfer 11 tracks (24/48K) over network to mixing station. Can take amazingly high signal levels without distortion. I love it, and would highly recommend it. Music123 did a great job, shipped in a timely fashion, received within a week.
If youÆre looking for a great multi track recorder, look no further. AlesisÆ HD24 is an astonishing recorder that overcomes almost all the drawbacks of HD based recordingùright down to the sticker price. The HD24 is ready for work right out of the box with its 24 1/4ö balanced TRS I/OÆs as well as 24 channels of digital ADAT optical. In Digital ADAT mode you can sample at a whapping 96kHz; however, at the rate the HD24 is limited to only 12 channels. Like ADAT, thereÆs a 9-pin connector for syncing multiple units for a massive 120 track total, and the 24-bit A/D and D/A converters with 128X oversampling keeps the sound unspoiled. The HD24Æs dual hot swappable EIDE drive bays are awesome. The costs of EIDE drives continue to plummet. A 30GB EIDE drive goes for under $100 and provides over 2 hours of 24 track audio. It would take about nine, 42 minute, 8 track, ADAT tapes costing much more to house that much music. Unlike tape machines, youÆll never worry about cleaning or replacing heads. Usually after 1000 hours of recording time ADAT tape heads need replacing. Not so with the HD24. Since it is HD based, there are no heads to clean or replace. The recording process itself is exceedingly uncomplicated. Simply insert a HD caddy in either bay, select that drive, arm the track number(s) you want to record onto and hit play and record. The 24 channel LED meter bridge keeps you posted on whatÆs being recorded to the disk. Punch-ins are somewhat different on the HD24. You must punch both play and record simultaneously to overdub onto an armed track(s). The HD24 also comes complete with its on remote control (LRC). While the LRC is no BRC, it does get the job done. If youÆre thinking of using multiple units I would highly recommend purchasing the BRC. However, with the HD24Æs dual drive setup, backups are no big deal. Simply send the data from one drive to the other and youÆre done. ThereÆs no need for a second machine. If you own an ADAT compatible recorder, the Alesis HD24 supports backups and transfers using three sets of ADAT optical jacks as well as its ADAT Sync I/O ports. Meaning you can transfer 24 sample-accurate tracks at once to any ADAT unit, digital mixer, computer interface or other HD recorder in real time. AlesisÆ ADAT File Streaming Technology (ADAT FST) is designed explicitly to handle the task of efficiently storing and retrieving huge files that are created by multi track data. Many of the HD24Æs counterparts use ordinary computer-based formats that are fine for handling small data files. However, with massive audio data files, computer-based formats break up the data into many small files scattered over the disk which leads to fragmentation resulting in seek and access slowdowns. ADAT FST keeps all your songs tracks in associated clusters for practically instant access. I my opinion Alesis has produced the first HD recorder worthy the title ôADATö. If youÆre looking to explore the world of HD recording, look no further than the HD24.
