The D112 has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the best kick drum microphones ever made. Heavy-footed drummers wont faze it, because the D112 handles up to 168 dB SPL with no audible distortion.
  • Handles up to 168db SPL with no audible distortion
  • Low diaphragm resonance
  • Extremely robust construction
  • 2-year parts and labor warranty

AKG D 112 Kick Drum Microphone
Onstage or in the studio, this is the mic for cleaning up the dirty low down. Stays free of distortion even at high SPLs. Very low diaphragm resonance, relatively narrow-band rising high-frequency response at 4kHz, and extremely robust construction.

Kick Drum Mic
A specially engineered diaphragm with very low resonance frequency maintains solid and powerful response below 100 Hz, while a narrow band presence rise at 4 kHz punches through dense mixes with little or no added EQ. The result is a kick drum sound that ideally balances precise definition and forceful impact. The D112 is also an excellent choice for use with bass cabinets, trombones, etc. Built-in windscreen, stand adapter included.

Channel Strips of the Stars: Ronan Chris Murphy

World-class producer/engineer/mixer Ronan Chris Murphy s credits include King Crimson, Steve Morse, Terry Bozzio, Victor Bisetti, Gregg Bissonette, Tony Levin, and projects with members of Tool, Ministry, Weezer, Dishwalla, and Yes. A huge fan of A Designs Audio, Ronan was kind enough to share some of his drum-recording signal chains: Well all of the drums for Terry Bozzio's Jazz trio were recorded with all A Designs Audio solid state preamps. For drum overheads I used Shure KSM32 condenser mics (#270141) into a Pacifica; for kick drums, AKG D112s into A Designs Pacificas (189903). (I prefer the Shure Beta 52 (#270267) for kick but they (D112s) were pre-mounted inside Terry's (Bozzio) kick drums. Actually I have used the Shure KSM32 into Pacifica combo on tons of great drummers, including Terry Bozzio, Victor Bisetti (Los Lobos), Gregg Bissonette (Santana, David Lee Roth), and Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Mister Mister, The Rembrandts).

"It's Great, but more critical mic placement is key."

Fine microphone! Unlike a B52, you can't just stick it up there anywhere close and get the canned sound of the mic. Moving it slightly will yeild widely varying results... thats good if you know what you're doing. Sounds awesome thru a nice PA. I always thought the Beta52 sounded like a basketball. Different ears, different tastes. Very little EQ required... suck some out at 250Hz, boost a bit at 5k. And if you want, add some shelf boost above 8k for some serious CLICK.... best kick sound i've ever heard. SLAMMIN!

I know that there are better kick mic's out there but for the price this is the best mic in existence. Unless you are going to spend thousands of dollars on a kick mic then this is the mic for you. Great for live or studio applications. Deep rich sound for a nice thump and just the right amount of beater sound to give the attack.

I've listened to this mic live, and I think it rules. But, I've listened to it in recording studio, and I personally its not a good first choice. Its got that ping that sounds like a basketball snapping on the ground. Too much high end, not enough bass sound. Personally, I would go with a Shure Beta52 over this anyday. The beta52 is the perfect choice for any application. Check out that before this.

I own this Mic and have owned more expensive ones. When people see this mic in front of your bass drum, they recognize it because of it's distinct design and know your using pro equipment. Moreover this mic has earned it's reputation, it proceeds it hands down as one of the best mics in the industry, at least for now. No regrets here, and personally I'm not going bad mouth any other brand, this mic speaks volumes for itself!
